So. Triptans. And other things.

Those of you who take meds for migraines, can you tell me your experiences with them? It seems that as of June 1 my provider is moving Relpax to the "not preferred" list because, as they say, there are other meds to treat this condition that are cheaper. Arg.

So it seems that I shall be soon going in to my doc to discuss my migraines and other possibilities. If I try other things and they don't work as well as Relpax well, then I'll just suck it up and pay more, I suppose*. But I'd had it in my mind to maybe poke around and try others anyway, since Relpax seems to be getting slightly more hit-or-miss these days.

* Not that my plan is forthcoming as to exactly what I'll pay, and not that they did me the courtesy of informing me about this. I had to find out when I logged in to Express Scripts to refill my Strattera scrip. GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE I NEED TO REFILL MY RELPAX, HUH?!

I've taken Axert (almotriptan) for migraines and it works for me. From what I understand, it has the fewest side-effects of the triptans but it doesn't work for everyone. Most of my friends who have big-M-can't-do-anything-but-curl-up-in-a-ball-for-72-hours Migraines take Imitrex, either by injection or orally, but it can heighten sensitivity to light and sound and be a pretty unpleasant experience.

That's all my anecdata for the moment.

Thanks, that helps. :)

Poking around my provider's site led to EVEN MORE CONFUSION about what is and isn't available for me, but as I was contemplating going in to my GP to talk over my migraines anyway, might as well do it now.

I've been on zolmitriptan for around 4 years and my love for it is great and mighty. I'm wiped out for the day once I've had it, but it's a fairly pleasant wiped-out-ness, and the pain's usually gone within two-three hours.

Thanks! I tend to be fairly tired out after Relpax, too, but I will happily accept being wiped out to having the migraine, no matter what med it is. :)

I take Maxalt and have for years & years. Nothing else gets the migraine gone as fast or as completely. LOVE IT.

I take Imitrex, but my insurance company's been a bit of a bitch about that lately too. Might be worth checking out, I've never had much problems. It kills the pain dead but sometimes makes me a bit dizzy/ditzy/unsafe to drive.
