The couple on this one are buying a luxury beach house in Panama. They are disappointed in the first house because it doesn't have a pool. The house is FIFTY FEET from the OCEAN.
Actually, I have some minor sympathy on this point. I am terrified of swimming in the ocean and would only ever be willing to swim in a pool. Although I don't, of course, know whether that's the case for this couple.
I suspect you'd be far more sensible and buy your million-dollar house with a pool on a nice hill overlooking the ocean, so you got an even better view, instead of getting one directly on the seashore, in that case!
House Hunters is hilarious for the sheer pickiness of the people featured on it. I mean, I guess they have to play that up, because it's the only drama ("drama") in the show, but still. I remember one that was like, "This house is perfect in every way, but I don't like the color of the kitchen." And I was like, but, but, easily fixed problem!
I'm appalled at the number of people on either House Hunters show who go into a house with a PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL kitchen, wrinkle their noses, and say "This kitchen is out of date. It has to go."
I mean, there's "I hate this kitchen," and then there's "This kitchen is out of date."
I think I might have seen that one when I was at my mom's. The people were appalling. On the other hand, they're always appalling on that show.
I cannot imagine moving to Panama or any other country in order to enjoy the lifestyle of white privilege that is the real draw to those Americans looking to live there.
Occasionally I find someone on the show who doesn't utterly appall me. But I mostly watch it for the few times it shows people looking at houses that have local architectural stuff in them. I am therefore disappointed in the 75% of the shows where the people go to a foreign country and choose to live in a condo community where every condo looks exactly like a condo you'd see in the U.S., with the addition of, perhaps, palm trees in the courtyard.
And then there was that recent episode where the woman in the couple had just gotten a new job in, I think it was, Bangkok, and they ended up renting a condo in an area that would force her to go through Bangkok rush hour traffic to get to her office. She said his opinion counted more on the place because he was working from home. WELL ... myrialuxalso works from home, and therefore I thought his opinion on the workspace he had in this house was also very important ... but I also said that we had to find a house that was within a 15-minute drive for me to work. It's called compromise. So nerts to them!
I can always tell the difference between Americans and Europeans on House Hunters International: the Americans go into a house, wrinkle their noses, and say "This room is small!" The Europeans go in, smile, and say "This room is so cozy!"
I am appalled by the small spaces in New York that people pay millions for. I don't care if it's in a trendy neighborhood or near Central Park! It's an apartment.
Yes, well. My dad bought a second condo in Mexico in a certain beachside locale in part because it had a pool, and also in part, and I quote his wife directly, "There were fewer Mexicans there."
Sounds like my own dad, who'd like to move to Mexico or Costa Rica, but only in those places already full of expats so he doesn't have to learn Spanish.
