I adore my 70-300 lens for birds, but the one I leave on all the time for those grab-the-camera moments is the 18-200. The 18-55 is a nice one for indoor shooting (parties etc.) and that camera is supposed to have superior low-light sensitivity, so you may not even need flash in a well-lighted venue.
The 70-300 on the D5000 is going to be outstanding for nature photography! Plan to use a monopod or tripod to get the very best out of the lens.
VR has made me so happy. You are going to loooooove it!
