If you're going to copy panels from another comic for your comic, shouldn't you pick something less well-known than Bleach?

Thanks.

Here's a dA article if you don't mind boosting it there as well (as you are a fairly prominent Bleach fanartist):

. . . what the hell, dude? T____T Thanks for the head's up.

Wow. That's definitely copied, if only in the art style, character design, and general feel (Can't see the embedded pictures on the lj post you linked to, so I can't directly compare to any Bleach images).

That's a shame. Radical Books has had some pretty cool, original stuff.

I wonder if it's deadline pressure leading to him copying, or just him doing that for his portfolio and pencils and the editors not catching it so he thinks it's OK?

I mean, when drawing my comics I've referred to panels from other comics and manga, but (a) I never copied a panel directly and (b) if I were using a panel to reference a pose, I didn't use a similar character design. GAH

He is working with some associate artists as well. I wonder if he's giving them roughs and they're adding their own plagarisms. Of course, they may be just following his direction. Hard to say what an "Assistant Artist" does.

Someone in the comments superimposed a Kenpachi panel over a panel from Incarnate. Not pretty.

It looks like he ripped off Hellsing a little too, does that count?

[identity profile] txtriffidranch.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
But didn't you know that in comics, it's not copying unless the artist in question gets ripped off himself? (Sorry, but I actually heard one such tool make precisely that argument at a Dallas Fantasy Fair about fifteen years ago. That's why, when Evan Dorkin had a similar gag in his "Northwest Comix Collective" feature about five years later, I realized "Holy Jesus, that attitude really is that widespread.")

I haven't looked at comments since I posted the link, but I'm surprised I haven't seen any of the possible trolls screaming "How dare you call plagiarism when there's only a passing similarity that's entirely explained by coincidence!" that usually peppers these things.

[identity profile] txtriffidranch.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I haven't bothered. I'm at the point where in most forums, I skip the comments section entirely because I know I'll suffer from head explodey within five entries. This is particularly true of most science sites, because you have Cat Piss Men trolling all day in the hopes of any new story that mentions evolution.

Whoo boy, I remember all the eejits defending the guy who traced Blade of the Immortal panels for his Samurai Zombie (or whatever) comic, which was even more obvious a ripoff than this one. I made a blueline/redline comparison that was about 90% identical, and it's all "What's your problem? It's not YOUR art, so who cares! You faked that somehow! UR JUST JELUZZ!"

Yeah... I am vindictive with envy over the fact that he has a LIGHTBOX? :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember that, and all the OUTRAGE that you'd DARE accuse this poor guy of plagiarism when he OBVIOUSLY had drawn it all himself!

Well if you look just a bit down on the 1st comments page they did an overlay of Kenpachi in the same position and his drawing - and they match exactly - so I don't think these kind of griefers will raise their head. I admittedly haven't clicked the further comment pages, though.

Okay, reading madame_manga's comment, it's clear I'm too naive in that assessment.

[livejournal.com profile] madame_manga did exactly the same thing with an entry to the Tpop Rising Stars competition a few years ago and people insisted she was jealous and making it up. O.o

Yes, when I read a bit farther down, I realised I was too naive.

Yes but his dad is Gene Simmons so I guess that gives him carte blanche to steal others people's ideas and layouts.

That is officially the funniest thing I have seen all day, and full of the most fail. Yes, I am including the Utter Fail that has been work in that assessment.

Wow.
