Man, when I waited tables in a late night pub just around the corner from a greek-fave night club I came to LOVE students with their parents gold AmExes!
Coffee & desert at 3am: paying with cash= 0-5% tip paying w/Dad's AmEx= 20-25% tip...more if they're about to get lucky!!!!
(I can't make myself use my credit card to pay for small purchases unless I've forgotten to hit the ATM and don't have enough cash. And this is even though I have no service charge per transaction. It just seems wrong somehow.)
I broke myself of the habit of using my credit card for anything but hotel reservations by giving it to Toby with instructions that if I were to come over to his apartment and ask for it, he was to give it to me no questions asked. As I thought, the mere effort of hauling my butt over there stopped me from using it. Now that we're in the same house, I still haven't picked the habit back again - if I find myself doing so, I shall request that he squirrel it away somewhere in his office.
My head is much better than this weekend, but still ... thick and fuzzy, mostly. No real pain, but pressure.
I hate using it for small transactions, the pileup at the end of the month makes reconciling the bill a pain. We do tend to use it for all eating out stuff. (That was a tug of war I lost.)
Using it for small purchases is wrong, I feel, because the merchant has to pay a percentage or a fee to the card company for each transaction, and the small businesses can get really hosed by that. AmEx takes the biggest bite, as I recall---as much as 4%?---which is why it is not the universal cure-all that AmEx ads portray.
Oh, the shame of buying coffee on a credit card! I think I've committed that particular sin only a few times, when I was out of cash and dying for a coffee (for me to set foot inside a coffee shop, the need has to be dire indeed!). I always feel sheepish buying little things on a credit card, and guilty because I know it's an added fee for the merchants. Of course, I'm terrible at remembering to pick up cash, so it happens more often than I'd like!
