Arg!

I have been doing really well lately at taking my Strattera in the morning, but we've now hit a snag. You see, the reason I've been able to remember every day is due to following a suggestion from my doctor - putting a glass of water next to my bed every night so it's there in the morning and I see it.

Problem is, Sora's now found this Neat! New! Water! Source! and drinks from it in the night. Putting a book on top of the glass no longer dissuades him, as he's discovered he can knock it off, and last night I discovered that covering the top with Glad Press N Seal doesn't work, as he simply knocked the glass itself over.*

The next obvious solution would be a bottle of some sort I guess.** I don't want a plastic one of the sort that you buy water in at the grocery store because after a couple of rounds of washing they develop scratches on the inside which, I am told, can harbor some pretty nasty bacteria. Do the metallic ones made for cyclists have an inside coating which stops the water from tasting like metal? And do they make them in small versions? I don't want a huge thing, mostly because it just needs to hold enough water to let me take the meds I take at night and the one med in the morning.***

Provided I don't kill the cat before then, of course.

--
* After, of course, dislodging the Press N Seal so that water went all over the bedside stand.

** [livejournal.com profile] myrialux keeps threatening to get me a sippy cup.

*** The solution is not to thake the morning med at a later time. I've tried that. The ADHD makes it impossible to remember to take it consistently, which makes the ADHD worse, which... well, you get the point.

I have a Thermos-brand metal water bottle, which doesn't taste bad to me and I believe comes in smaller sizes, though they may be decorated with kiddie things.

Oh wait, you want little. I'm sorry, I missed that.

I also have memory issues. Things like this I tend to put physically on top of something else I will always need, so I'm forced to move them, which puts them in my hands. In my case, I do tend to remember my meds (long enough habit) so I tend to put surprise things on top of the meds. Alternatively: put the glass in the sock drawer, preferably in such a way that you have to grab it to move it.

How about those coffee cups with closable tops that people can take in cars and sip while driving? I'm not sure how watertight they'd be when knocked over, even when the lid's completely shut, but it could work and has to be better than a sippy cup although I would be totally tempted to go for that option.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on how short I can get one - the taller ones seem a bit prone to being knocked over by a thirsty cat intent on access. XD

[identity profile] m00nface.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, looking at it there's only big ones available, espresso's supposed to be drunk instantly or that'd be ideal! :D

If you're not too fussed about appearances, what about using something like this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anywayup-CLASSIC-BEAKER-months-plus/dp/B000G1TDNS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=baby&qid=1256740095&sr=8-3), that won't spill a drop but is basically a normal cup as soon as you take the lid off?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! That may end up being the solution. XD

My dad, who's legally blind, has some with big, flat bottoms. I think he gets them at Wal-Mart. Here's (http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/sea-bowld-stainless-steel-wide-bottom-16oz-mug-reviews) an example from a quick Google search.

Do you have a Whole Foods grocery nearby? They carry Sigg water bottles. We've been recycling commercial spring water bottles, although (as you say) this may not be a good idea. But the Young Lady has a Sigg-type bottle that she bought as a souvenir from the TkPk Folk Festival, and she hasn't complained about the taste and keeps using it. She also has a Nalgene water bottle that she uses sometimes.

I second the Sigg bottles! They come in these really small sizes that's absolutely adorable as well: http://mysigg.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=26

ARG. I have the same problem; I was thinking of buying one of those pretty crocheted mats with beads that the Brits call "jug covers".

I bet what you want is one of those glass "bedside carafes (http://www.google.com/products?rlz=1C1GGLS_enUS310US311&sourceid=chrome&q=bedside+carafe&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=017oSrP_J4GCsgP7jciaBQ&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CB8QrQQwAA)" that have an upside-down glass on them. (I would knock this over myself.)

Does there have to be water in the glass for you to remember to take the meds?

[identity profile] seawolf10.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't speak for telophase, but I've found through bitter experience that dry-swallowing any medication is a HORRIBLE idea.

One agonizing chemical burn/sore that lasted for two solid weeks and sent a spike of searing pain through my throat every time I swallowed...well, once was more than enough.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting dry swallowing.

But if having the empty glass there is enough to make you go "oh, I need to take my pills" and get your pills and some water, then you have the reminder and the cat has nothing to drink or spill.

[identity profile] mothoc.livejournal.com 2009-10-28 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I carry a 750ml version of http://www.camelbak.com/en/sports-recreation/bottles/kids-bottles.aspx around with me at work. The drinking mechanism requires you to bite it to drink, so if it spills, there's no leaking at all (or only a few drops if that). The drinking end also folds down into the handle making it nearly impossible to get access to by a cat.

Ice cubes in a tupperware cup?

What about putting a covered glass for you and a saucer of water for the cat?

Does the cup need to have water in it, to serve as a reminder?

I've had a Rubbermaid 20z plastic water bottle for a year now. I use it every day and I'm still (relatively!) hale and healthy. It's also made of stuff that does not leech nasty chemicals into your water (I forget what that stuff is called!). So that kind might be OK? For me, it's superior to the stainless steel kind because those are so damn heavy, I just know I'd drop it on my foot every single day.

If you're not so paranoid about plastic as a health risk, or just worried about plasticky aftertastes, that you have to spring for glass/nalgene/metal bottles, there are a lot of different styles and sizes of reusable, dishwasher-safe plastic water bottles by companies like Rubbermaid, Tupperware, or Zyliss. They're pretty inexpensive, you can usually find a few different styles even in drugstores and mainstream supermarkets, or houseware stores like Bed Bath and Beyond, and I'd imagine they're much more chuggable than trying to drink from a sippycup! Tupperware even makes drink tumblers with matching lids (http://www.amazon.com/Tupperware-Impressions-Dripless-Tumbler-Set/dp/B002BDR6LU/ref=pd_sim_dbs_k_1) if you'd rather drink from something shaped like a regular drinking glass instead of a bottle...

(As for not killing the cat...perhaps booby-trap the nightstand with some aluminum foil and/or double-sided tape to discourage him from jumping up there in the first place?)

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Totally not green but I just use plain old plastic water bottles. I eat a lot of fruit so I don't drink many of them but I always keep a 24 pack in my car for dry days at work and for pop alternatives at parties.

Morning pills

[identity profile] mustangsally78.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I keep a big old post-it on my bathroom mirror that says "DRUGS" to remind me to take my pills in the morning.

I also gave up and conceeded the computer-side water glass to the cats. I use coffee cups and they LOVE to drink out of it and put their ass between me and the monitor.

Figures.

I use a nalgene (spelling?) bottle. I also saw some disposable coffee cups with lids (similar to what one would receive a starbucks coffee in. One could probably use them a few days in a row before disposing and replacing. Or what about those "half pint" water bottles, I think ozarka makes them. That seems like an ideal amount of water to get the drugs down the throat.

As someone who works with toddlers, I'm all about the sippy cup idea! They have some really cute Dora and Elmo motifs.
