Poor kitten!

Sora is a real scaredy-cat and the slightest thing freaks him out. Tonight, it's the secondary litterbox. As in, I decided it was way past time I actually washed it*, did so, and it's now sitting propped up against the edge of the tub, drying. OMG THIS IS WEIRD. SO, SO WEIRD. This is so incredibly weird that Sora cannot enter the bathroom, despite trying several times, and is now curled up at my feet, staring at the door to the bathroom.

I suspect he may spend the first day or two at the new house shut up in one room, so as to keep him from hiding in someplace where he might get hurt. If he gets too freaked out, I might do what Mom did - her vet gave her some kitty tranquilizers, which she gave to her cat (half-doses), so she spent the first week or so in the new house pleasantly stoned.

* I almost never do that. I just scoop and refill, and when it gets dirty enough, change out the litter.

I changed to the cheap plastic bins with lids from Wal-Mart. After awhile I don't clean it out, I lid it up and toss it and replace it with a new one.

My cats and I are doing our part to kill the planet faster.

ETA: Oh, but for the record that's not too often now. Mostly they go outside now under the bushes around the neighborhood. I've got a cat door in my patio window. The only drawback is some days I come home to temporarily having more cats than when I left.

Anyway, does Sora like catnip? Last time I moved my cat was super-freaked, but I broke out the catnip and spread it around a little, and she chilled out and investigated it everywhere, then all was cool.

Sora does like catnip, but it tends to make him mean and paranoid. :D

Oh, well that wouldn't help. It might be amusing, but it wouldn't help. :)

I gave the Pookie xanax when we moved, and it helped a lot with his anxiety. When he was done being happy!dog, he went around doing things just as usual.

I was already planning on taking him and Nefer to the vet for the day, since they have to get their exams done at about the same time anyway, and then taking them from the vet to the new place. I may ask about tranqs then. :) (I've never pilled Sora, so I don't know how easy it is, but it HAS to be easier than Nefer.)

It is beneath the Pookie's dignity to be difficult about pills. THANK GOD. First dog I've ever had who will take a pill politely. He only spits them out if they're broken and pooling powder.

I put him in my mom's car for the move (portable doggie kennel!). Having him out of the way made things sooooo much easier. The vet plan sounds great. They might be able to pill Sora for you for the first dose.

I usually lurk (hi!), but I'm going to chime in on the cat issue and recommend the Nutri-Vet Pet Ease Plug ins when you move. It's kinda pricey for what amounts to valerian and chamomile in a pheromone solution, but... it really does make a difference. I'm babysitting a crazy, paranoid cat for the summer, and using them made the difference between a cat that squinched himself under a box in the closet and hissed non-stop, to a cat that comes out and looks around.

I can vouch for feliway plugins. We get them from amazon in 6 pack refills for jiji. While she's not Tommy friendly, she doesn't freak as bad, comes out to explore and let's Marco pick her up and some people pet her. Marco thinks you should use it at your current place, dose up the new place so it smells the same and that should help. Jiji mostly stays in the bedroom so that's where we use it.

You know, I had a Feliway plug-in sometime last year, after I moved in. I can't say for sure it did anything, but certainly having a familiar smell wouldn't hurt one bit.
