For some reason, in the install of IE 7 over on the server I admin, this page wants to load the Windows Media Player 6.4 Shim, but not on the IE 7 install over on my own computer. I can find NOTHING on that page that would involve loading Windows Media Player in any way, shape, or form. It's not in the code for the two widgets on the side, and it's not in any of the individual blog posts, because the thing still shows up even when I remove them. Aargh.

Anyone else having that problem in IE?

No idea what's causing the desire for WMP (prefetch of something linked on the page?), but it did the same thing in my copy of IE7.

However, it doesn't announce it the second time I go to the page, even after closing IE, because once the control has been installed it assumes it has permission to load it from then on. If I go to the Programs dialog and disable it, it will then announce it. Maybe IE7 on your machine already has the control installed, so it's loading it silently?

Yeah, that's probably why it's not showing up on mine, but I can't figure out why on earth it's showing up on the other - as far as I can tell there is NOTHING on that page that should be calling a media player of any sort, no video, audio, Flash, etc. And I want it off there in all cases because it makes the website look hinky. Aaargh!

The problem appears to be caused by awstats_misc_tracker.js. I do not see why it should cause it, as it appears to be just checking to see if various controls are loaded, but either it is doing it wrong or IE has a bug (shocking, I know); this does not happen in Chrome.

How to test this yourself:

1. Save the page to an HTML file on your desktop.
2. Load the file in IE and confirm that it wants WMP.
3. Edit the file and remove the line that calls this script (near the bottom).
4. Load the file in IE (after restarting it) and confirm that it says nothing about WMP.

Thank you!! I've been beating my head against the desk over this for a while now.

After enough* years as a developer, one can find many bugs more or less by instinct.
