(I remember reading that and thinking, "Wow, they had to telegram their father to get permission because their mother won't make that decision without him! Gaaaaah!")

(I had the impression that, at least in part, Mum was passing the buck and assumed he'd say no, but got her bluff called.)

(Besides, how can you not like a series where a character changes her name from Ruth to Nancy because her uncle told her that pirates are ruthless?)
