Mostly to figure out how the hell to do it. I know I don't really have a good handle on it, because I see artists do paintings like I'm trying to do and only take a few hours on it, far less than I'm doing.
I'm also trying to work out how Technoelfie (http://technoelfie.deviantart.com) does such amazing things with light and dark. I'm a little bit closer to figuring out how she does mouths now. :)

Probably the artists in question put in a lot of hours before they got to that level. Anyway, as I've said, it's really interesting to see how a specific pic comes along step-by-step, so I hope you'll keep posting updates on this ;>
It means they learned the techniques I'm trying to figure out through experimentation, which drives me crazy because I am not an experiment-and-find-it-out type of learner - I'll completely miss obvious things to try and do and not know when to go far enough and when I'm wasting my time on something. I'm a use-the-manual type of learner, hence me owning a ton of reference books on whatever thing I happen to get into. :)
It also drives me crazy when someone asks for a tutorial on something and poeple post with "You can't learn X from a tutorial - you ahve to just do it." Er, no, you can't learn it, but sometimes you need the structure of a tutorial to give you an idea of where to go.
I took an oil painting class in undergrad which suck rocks because the teacher didn't do anything I'd actually call "teaching." Apparently we were supposed to learn 2000 years of theory by ourselves. Arg.
That's among the best I have seen from your works...how are you doing this one again? I think the "U" between upper lip and nose is a bit too deep, not that it's wrong (you know of this 1,000,000,000,000,000 times more than me). It's just my opinion.
I'm using Painter IX to do this, and using the Tinting tool, which lays down transparent layers of color. Other than that, I'm mostly playing it by ear. :)
hmnn, he's very kissable (which ist not helpful at all). I like how you post your in progress pics, because some day I will learn to digital color, someday...

Is it for anything specific or for training purposes?

I mostly have to remember that the painting is in the blobby, horrid stage for a very very long time, until juuuuuust before it's finished.
