YAY for modern appliances!

This is a book titled Management in Daily Living, from 1944. It is a college-level home economics textbook, with a focus on efficiency.

This quote, taken from the section on how to vacuum efficiently is making me VERY VERY GRATEFUL for my lovely 21st-century Oreck vacuum cleaner:
Operate the cleaner slowly. Go over the entire rug systematically. It will take about 20-30 minutes to clean a 9 by 12 foot rug, if it is cleaned about once a week.
Today, I can do the same thing in 2-3 minutes. Perhaps shorter, but I always have to stop and let a frightened cat who chose the wrong piece of furniture to hide under escape, and I never manage to pick up all the pennies and whatnot on the floor beforehand.

And a piece of advice which I would NEVER give to anyone today, as it is a recipe for disaster:
Learn how to repair broken [electrical] cords. Do a thorough job for safety.
You must also cover all upholstered furniture before sweeping a room.

Also, because I sense a theme developing in today's journal posts and comments: WOLVERINE!

...When you break the wires inside it?

No, then you need rubber gloves and those little screw cap suckers.

My dad does electric work. And pipe work. And tile stuff.

You'd be on the competent end of the bell curve. :) There are not many people I'd trust with repairing electrical cords.

XD My dad used to take me to work during the summers, starting when I was like - nine. It's a useful skill set to have. ♥
