Operate the cleaner slowly. Go over the entire rug systematically. It will take about 20-30 minutes to clean a 9 by 12 foot rug, if it is cleaned about once a week.Today, I can do the same thing in 2-3 minutes. Perhaps shorter, but I always have to stop and let a frightened cat who chose the wrong piece of furniture to hide under escape, and I never manage to pick up all the pennies and whatnot on the floor beforehand.
And a piece of advice which I would NEVER give to anyone today, as it is a recipe for disaster:
Learn how to repair broken [electrical] cords. Do a thorough job for safety. You must also cover all upholstered furniture before sweeping a room.
