WTF?!

Good, if a bit weird: Marvel Comics adapting Pride and Prejudice.

Bad: FAILING TO DO ANYTHING RESEMBLING RESEARCH FOR HAIRSTYLES AND MAKEUP AND MAKING THEM ALL LOOK LIKE MODERN 21ST CENTURY WOMEN WEARING DARK LIPSTICK.

http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.7021

Also note: sample page 4. In panel 3, check out where the bottoms of the windows are, and how large the panes are in comparison to the people standing in front of them. In panel 5, see where the 30something heavily made up 21st century Bennett sisters are standing in relation to the windows. Apparently they decided they were in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and took a draft of a DRINK ME potion and ended up giantesses crouching awkwardly in the drawing room.

It's the too-low-budget-to-hire-researchers costume drama version. Oy.

There isn't even consistency within the costumes. There was definitely some era mish-mash going on there. Grr.

Doesn't exist. Ignore it and its awful Greg Land Wannabe Art. (Though Greg Land himself would be EVEN WORSE! Who wants Lizzy Bennett with pornface and a dress drawn over an airbrushed swimsuit model?)

What sort of failradery is this?

I think the worst part is their ginormous vacant pornface smiles.

No matter how brilliantly written, that is just plain visually unpleasant art.

[identity profile] wintersweet.livejournal.com 2009-04-24 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
This is not good art.
(Never mind the historical inaccuracies.)

This is no better than any of the generic slapdash "we make 'em 'cause there's no copyright on the stories and we don't have to pay a real writer and parents buy 'em like crazy" literary/educational comics I had inflicted on my as a kid. I thought at least it might have a little more style, even if I expected it to be a style I didn't *like*.

Marvel. *pfui*

Heh, I was just bitching about this to [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore earlier today!

Of all the things that make me angry about this, I think the most grrr-inducing one is that when this thing tanks abysmally--as it rightly should--the people in charge at Marvel are going to sigh and say, "Well, see, we tried to do something girls would like and they didn't want it! Once again we have proved that women are not a viable market for comics!"

And then I'm going to set them all on fire with my brain.

This will also be the case with Marvel Divas, which the men will hate because it will give them fanservice but only have superheroines apparently talking about men and shopping, and the women will hate because most kinda want heroines who don't look like blow up dolls-especially in a book directed towards them-and don't read superhero comics to have women do nothing but talk about men and shop.

Normally, Firestar alone would be "sign up where?" but just the preview art is enough to turn me off.

If only I could force them to read Gail Simone's Birds of Prey and the recent Manhunter series and Wonder Woman: Hiketeia and go "THESE! We like these! This one? This one made all of us who turned up our noses at Wonder Woman FANS FOR ETERNITY! This one? This one had a career and a kid and an ex and kicked serious butt and didn't let Superman push her around. This one? Had a woman effectively run the superhero community and pwn everyone she ever met from a wheelchair. We want these!"

Sample page two makes me want to stick my head in the oven. Oh God, Marvel, no. Just no.

Additional note: trying to view the sample pages in Chrome crashes the browser horribly.

Why couldn't the cover artist do the inside art instead?

[identity profile] movingfinger.livejournal.com 2009-04-24 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's ugly.

Aside from the wrongness of the appearance and styling of the women, Bingley wore a blue coat and rode a black horse. Austen doesn't give us many explicit instructions, but this is one instance of her doing so.

from the last sample page, mr. darcy, i assume, looks like he has three lips . . . OH HOW ATTRACTIVE.

...whut.

It's not bad enough that EA has decided to do unspeakable things to The Divine Comedy by turning it into a hack-n-slash video game where Dante kills demons with a giant cross and death scythe, now the women of Pride and Prejudice have been turned into vacant porn face comic book characters?

.... because it is just so tough to find picture references for actual 19th c women!
