I sent that from the bookstore, and went ahead and bought Part 1, so presumably I'll know before too long. Although I got an Amazon shipment this week, so it might be a while before I get to it. :D
The author seems to shift gears partway through, as though unsure how exactly to tell the story, but all in all it's readable fun. Fair amount of objectification though, mostly in the service of titillation (I think it may be intended to sound like vintage porn/erotica, but author does not have enough control to pull it off) and even though it is pretending to be Victorian or Edwardian, it's still an irritating thing for the author to do.
In a very short review: self-conscious sequel-ready Lovecraftian pomo steampunk adventure fiction. Entertaining.
I'm approximately five pages into this on recommendation from a patron at from work. Consensus from the various library patrons I've talked to about this book is that you either love or hate it. I'm not far enough to have an opinion except that the title is way cool.
Although nothing about it seems directly cribbed from Michael Chabon, it struck me as the sort of thing he might write, so I think people who like Chabon would like this.

It sounded cool and steampunky, but I don't think it felt that way. Also attempted to be racy, but didn't succeed in my case. (Maybe I'm jaded.)
But as someone posted above, "you either love or hate it" is probably accurate, because I'm super-super picky when it comes to books.
If the book picks up, let me know.
