Renji pic

I AM NOT ENJOYING THIS. NOT AT ALL.

Well, someone has to throw themselves on the grenade; might as well be me.

Are you using the technique from here (http://www.wade.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/emilyrose-trailer.html)? Regardless, I'd totally tap that. *stares*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yup! Bought the DVD download a few weeks ago, watched it, started using it - the previous two pictures I did was with that. :)

Yeah, I remember the other one being from that, but wasn't sure if you were gonna use it here. I... might have to invest in that tutorial, for it looks very different than how I do things. *eyes*

HOW YOU SUFFER FOR YOUR ART

Um. I'm enjoying that.

On one hand, I do this to myself all the time so I understand where you're coming from.

On the OTHER hand.... OH WHAT THE HELL?! Crazah..... My icon, he faps to this.

Hey question; I've been toying with the doing color as black and white thing first method.

I'm having issues when it comes to the color. I've tried a few ways but I was curious how you did yours? ( with my finances suddenly being strapped as they are, I can't afford to get that tutorial). Is it a separate layer with just lower opacity, or is it set to something? :oa I've tried both and it always looks ugly and muddy...Hence my curiosity

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's many layers - as many as necessary to make it look right - set to various blending modes and opacities, using subtle coloring (set brush to hard-edged, low flow of 20%ish, then vary the opacity depending on what you're doing. Click the little lock in the Brush Controls palette to keep the brush from reverting to its default settings, if you haven't learned that yet - that was a lifesaver for me XD). There's no one tried-and-true combo, and I have to test each one. That being said, Color, Soft Light, and Hard Light tend to be the ones I use most, with a couple of Multiplies thrown in (at low opacity) for darker areas. But I give other blending modes a try, too - I think I've used Hue once or twice.

After I do the B&W, the next layer is pretty much the base color - it doesn't need to be strong, as other layers will build up as I'm using other colors to make the picture's colors complex. Then I start going in with other tints and shades on different layers to build up the shadows and highlights, adding in cool colors in the shadows and subtle tints of violets and greens and such to make the skin vibrant. Kind of resource-heavy, and the tutorial guy tends to collapse his layers into the greyscale layer once he's built up 5 or so and make new ones, but I'm exploiting my 3 gigs memory. :D

At some point - and that point is always the vague "when it feels right", the layers get collapsed all together and the refining continues right on the color. :) In the tutorial, he doesn't do the hair until this point, but for Matsumoto I did her hair in B&W, the tinted it and collapsed, and then continued working with her hair in color. Not sure how I'll approach Renji.

ETA; And just to emphasize the "subtle" in building up the colors - in the video, you usually can't really tell that the guy is adding colors as he paints, it's just after a few minutes you look back at the previous version and go "Whoa! There's color!" :)

Lovely *o*

The nose is way too big for the head. Right now he looks more gangsterfied than anything; if you fix that, and maybe make the lips a little thinner (right now they're really, really full), I think he'd look more Renji-esque.

Apparently I need to repeat every single time I post something that in my art process, I'm in a place right now where I cannot take crit at certain points during the picture without it killing the picture dead. Please don't offer it unless I specifically ask questions - I'd rather like to be able to finish this picture.

ETA: Now that I've calmed down slightly from my knee-jerk reaction, I can explain why crit - even relevant crit - affects me at the wrong times:

(a) you're looking at an extremely small version of an in-process picture that's compressed with jpg compression (the original is 11x17"at 300ppi. This is 7x10" at 72ppi). In other words: you're not actually seeing what I'm seeing when I work on it, and any crit offered is based on a flawed image, not the real image.

and

(b) it's currently my Renji. If I take crit now and change it, it's no longer my Renji, it's someone else's Renji. Others are welcome to draw or commission their own version, but unless I'm painting him for someone else, I have to be doing *my* Renji, or the picture stalls and I can't finish. If that makes sense.

(And one note about the choice of styling: Renji did come out of the streets and then the 11th, and his roughness is deliberately contrasted to the refinement of the 6th and Byakuya in particular. He is the closest thing to a gangster that the Court Guard Companies have.

As an aside - I grabbed the cheekbones, nose, and hairstyle from a banner of a site describing o-nii-kei style. :D)

I have to tell you the truth--I don't care what your explanations are, I thought your post was asking for a crit and that's what I gave you; and I gave it to you based on what I saw. If you didn't want one based on the 'old' version, post an update. Either that or be aware that others are just going to assume the same that I did--that you wanted an honest crit--and that they're going to post their opinion on it.

And crits don't necessarily mean that you have to go along with the advice; if you don't like it and the person was giving you their honest, non-malicious opinion, take it as a compliment that they actually took the time to give you constructive criticism to help you improve.

The in-progess shots are posted because people on my f-list ask for them and say they like seeing how a painting comes together.

This is my personal journal, not a public forum, not an art class. eel free to follow me on DevArt and post crits to things I post into my scraps there: that's what I use that site for.

[identity profile] emtigereyes.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Might be time to friendslock your art posts then. You've got quite a few random folks friending you, according to your profile.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
A large number of them actually participate and comment here - I just haven't friended them back because there are only so many hours in the day. I could filter more, but I filter enough already.* It's an imperfect system.

* And I don't even use most of the filters. They're primarily for special projects with a few people. XD

[identity profile] jaynec0bb.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I am on your f-list. Probably a 'was' now. I think it was when I was about to gain a four book deal from Tokyopop, but that was along time ago. But so that you know, real people that care would tell you what they see wrong on your piece, not tell you good job all the time and allow for you to learn nothing. However, if you're being so specific as to whom you'd like to hear from, and you suddenly got brash in reaction to what I wrote (which seems to be the only crit on the post), I certainly know where you stand ethically and maturely.

You're so self-sacrificing. ;)

I AM ONLY THINKING OF EVERYONE ELSE WHEN I DO THIS

I'd throw myself on THAT grenade.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a photo that came from the same photographer as the one I used for the above pic, which would be a PERFECT Renji/Rukia pic as it uses the same model and a much shorter young woman ... only I already lose enough sales to mad non-RenRuki shippers who think I'm a mad RenRuki shipper. XD

That might just be torture!
