A-Kon report, continued from previous.

Art Show Report: Put five pieces in - two originals (Sesshoumaru and Gojyo) and two prints (large-format prints of Sanzo and Vash the Stampede, matted). Sold four. Sold the Gojyo to the woman who bought Sanzo last year. I don't know what price three of them sold for because they either only got one bid - thus, the minimum - or they quick-sold and thus sold for my quick-sale price, and the art show staff hadn't gotten their act together, as per usual tallied the bid sheets and put that on the artist control sheets yet.

I do know that the large-format Sanzo sold at auction for a I-can't-believe-it $75, which MORE than makes up for the original selling last year for the minimum bid of $20. I priced the minimum bid of the Sesshoumaru at $35 (and quick-saled it at $70, but it probably went for minimum) because I had two people wander by the table and ask about it when I had it sitting out before I went up to the art show. The other minimum bids were $20 and $10, I think, so I'm getting at least that much when they send the check and the control sheet to me in about 6 weeks or so. Whee! Perfect timing for me to have totally forgotten about it, and get a nice surprise. That's the best part about putting stuff in art shows and having a leaky memory - you get these wonderful little checks at seemingly comletely random times.

Cosplayer Report:

Tons of Naruto cosplay, as always. Lots of Inu-Yasha, too, and Fullmetal Alchemist, too, gee I wonder why? :D Some Saiyuki. I saw only one Death Note group, which included Misa, L, Raito, and a lovely Mello in that FAAAAbulous coat and with a bar of chocolate which she carried around and didn't actually eat, which shows amazing self-restraint on her part and I commend her for it. No pictures because I didn't have my camera due to that previously-mentioned-on-this-LJ problem of nonfunctionality, but I'm going to poke about the Net for a bit and see if I can find any.

The most amusing cosplay, if you can call it that, was a giant waist-high plastic ball with stuff glued all over it a la the game Katamari Damacy, which was rolled around the con a lot.

The guy dressed as the box of Pocky was back, too. There were also Links in all colors of the rainbow, it seems, including pink.

Loot Report:

I got a Mythwear zip bag similar to this one, only mine says "Fullmetal Alchemist" on it. Not because I wanted to proclaim my love of FMA to the world, but because it was the least objectionable logo available. I could have hoped for a graphic instead of text, but they didn't ahve any I liked and I wanted that style bag. I had a Mythwear courier bag with the NERV logo on it for a few years, but the strap broke a month or so ago and I needed a replacement. This one isn't as big, and has a big funky plastic zipper around the exterior perimeter that can be unzipped to expand the bag.

I also got the Salty Dog III Saiyuki artbook that's just come out. I got a pack of lightweight manga paper that's got the blue guidelines already printerd on it and will go trhough my printer, a pack of 4x6" small manga paper cards to experiment with, and four Neopika pens, to see if I like them better than Microns. Plus two large tone sheets that seem expensive at $3.00 each, but aren't that expensive when you realize I shall be annoying to the company about it and scan them in and use them over and over.

Swag Report:

Got a phone strap, as did every single person at the con, featureg some character I've never heard of. Also accidentally got some Serenity swag of a couple of postcard-type things and a pin, not because I care about the movie, but because my friend Toby picked the stuff up and left it with me while he wandered the con and forgot about it. I shall be mailing it to him when I pay him for my quarter of the room price, because we forgot to settle up before he left.

Sales Report:

Top sellers overall, bookmarks, with Sesshoumaru (7 sold) and Edward Elric (8) leading the pack. The next most wanted ones were the various Saiyuki boys, with Hakkai (6) being the most popular. Sanzo was probably as popular as Hakkai, but I had a bookmark of him made from the Half-Naked Sanzo print, so he sold 3 band and 3 half-naked ones. Gojyo sold 4 and poor Goku brought up the rear with 3 sold, although he was very popular with young girls who didn't have any money and tried to hint to me that they'd like me to give him to them free.

Top seller in prints, Boys in the Band. Stickers: Sanzo and the Iruka/Naruto one with Iruka being all fatherly to child!Naruto. The Bishounen Coloring Book from last year sold quote well - 21, leaving me with only 2 left. I think I'll redo it, add a few more bishounen and fix the worst of the current ones, and run a very nice set through Dreamweaver Press because they do good work and I can have a color cover with them. The price will have to go up a bit from $5 to $7 or so because it cost more, but they'll look better than my Kinkos Specials, so hey.

[livejournal.com profile] pzb did well, too, selling half the prints she sent me. We discovered the Power of the Sesshoumaru Face because if he were on top of the stack, people would be irresistably drawn over to him and start leafing through the stack. Of course [livejournal.com profile] tesstrosa had her stack of Naruto prints on her table right next to is, and poeple who had gotten drawn over by the Power of the Sesshoumaru Face would then be distracted by the Power of the Naruto Crotch, but with those two prints right next to each other, they exerted a combined gravitational pull sufficient to send asteroids careening off course.

Observations: simple, stark, graphic pictures attract attention. Bright colors also attract attention. My buyers tended to be in their teens and 20s and female, while [livejournal.com profile] pzb's tend to be in their 20s and 30s and about 2/3 female and 1/3 male.

Large-format prints are the way to go: I brought 11, priced them at $12, and sold out of all of them. I even sold one of the L pictures at $12 to a girl who didn't know what Death Note was. Next year I'll definitely bring more of the 11x17" prints. The cards didn't move as well, but I think that I overpriced them, and I'll drop the price for AnimeFest and see if they sell. If they don't even sell there, I won't bother to make more. Strangely the stickers didn't sell as well this year - last year I sold almost all of them, but this year I only sold about 20, out of 76. I think I need to make more stickers of the popular prints from this time, and maybe drop the price to 50 cents from $1. I need to work out a better way to display stuff on the table, too - a few more stand-up things to attract attention. Maybe even a cheapie easel to stand behind the table and hold a large-format print to attract attention from farther away.

The best picture to gather attention was a large-format version of the Naruto/Hogwarts picture with Naruto asleep at this desk and Jiraiya about to slam a Rasengan on him. Note to self: get several copies of this so there will be one out every time.

Commissions and Job Proposals Report:

Requests for hentai: 0, which is down from last year's requests of 3.
Commissions with shounen-ai in them: 4, which is much different than last year when I had about 12, all but 1 of which had some form of shounen-ai.
Commissions for which I suspect Mary-Sue fanfiction exists: 1.

Friday had a drunk guy stagger into the Dealers' Room, sit crosslegged in front of a dealer's table, and go nonresponsive. Con medical staff were pinching his ears and stuff and he didn't respond. He was taken away by ambulance, but I don't know anything else.

The most spectacular accident occurred during one of the concerts when a band member got one of thsoe yoga balls and booted it into the audience. It described a perfect arc, the apex of which was one of the chandeliers, which shattered and showered the audience with glass. There were a few injuries from that, all of which were minor, as far as I know. The worst accident happened at a concert as well, but I don't know if it was the same one or not, and also involved a chandelier. The band was throwing T-shirts into the audience - I think that they may have been using a T-shirt cannon, like you see at sports events, but I could be wrong - and one got stuck in the chandelier. Some nimrod tried to poke it down with a really long stick, which he dropped and bashed another audience member. I don't know how bad the injury was, except that apparently it was worse than the shattered chandelier.

What? You want to know about the panels I attended and the other events happening at the con? Sorry. I stuck to the Komik Market for the most part. :)

I met a lot of LJ and DA people and with my brain like a sieve have forgotten most of them, and due to my innate laziness don't want to tax my brain to dredge out of memory the names/nicks of the ones I do remember. But hi, guys! *waves*

You can find lots of pictures of the con and some reports on events at the A-Kon pages on A Fan's View. I'll update the next post with links to that site pointing out costumes I thought were good or that are people I know. :)

...was he just a box of Pocky, or was he a box of Pocky with stick arms and legs and a "mouth"? (It is so sad that I want to know this.)

The art-popularity of all my snarky boys makes me happy for you and for them. :D

Judge for yourself (http://www.fansview.com/2005/akon/0603a0134.jpg). :)

Snarky boys seem to be quite the thing nowadays. Yay. :D

Hee! I don't think he's doing a "Konjiki no Gash Bell" cosplay, which is what I was wondering. But still cute!

[identity profile] chibipoe.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Just out of curiousity, do you still bring Nap Time to Cons? :)

You didn't read all the way through the post, did you? XD

[identity profile] chibipoe.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I did. It was invisible though. The paragraph used a special skill called Reading LJ On Work No Jutsu!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
(Is this reply going to work?)

Check yer postal mail in a week or so. Nothing thrilling and exciting, but it was thematic. :)

[identity profile] chibipoe.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? Where'd you send it, actually? o_O; I've moved and you may not have most up to date address.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Did you update your Amazon.com address? It's from there. You can log in and change it now, since it probably won't ship for a few days.

[identity profile] chibipoe.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet! Ok. That's fine. I was worried you'd used my old address or such. The amazon's fine, that's been updated.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I ever had your address. I know the city you live in and your last name solely because Amazon tells me so. :)

[identity profile] chibipoe.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
The horrible truth?

I only exist because Amazon tells you so. ;)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Are you really a superintelligent bot running loose on the Net?

[identity profile] chibipoe.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'll let you in on the TRUTH.

I'm Batman.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
OooOOoOoOOoOOOoooooOOOoOOoOOoOooo!!

Can I have a ride in the Batmobile?

[identity profile] chibipoe.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Only if you come to Dragon*Con. ;)

(AUGH. That sounds like a horrible come-on. "Yeah, baby. I'll let you ride my batmobile if you come with me to Dragon*Con!")

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
XD "And then we can 'go into the BatCave' if you know what I mean, huh, huh, huh!"

[identity profile] shymagical.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"The woman who bought Sanzo last year bought Gojyo this time"? I wonder if she's a 5x3 fan?? XD She could play with 'em!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
XD

She actually wants all four, and keeps hunting me down at cons to ask if I've done the others yet. I'm going to try my damndest to get Hakkai or Goku done for AnimeFest. Hopefully both. She told me they just bought a house and she's got lots of wallspace for art.

[identity profile] shymagical.livejournal.com 2005-06-07 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I couldn't resist! XD The mental image of a fangirl "playing doll" with two flat posters was too funny.
