Aaaaart

OKAY. I declare the greyscale portion dooooooone. On to color next time!

Yeah, the hair over on the left looks a bit weird, but it's going to be blended and so on a lot more. For those who don't know, this is Matsumoto Rangiku (last name first), and her zanpakuto is named Ash Cat. At her command, it dissolves into a cloud of ash that she can direct with her reiatsu (spiritual power). (Hence the working title: Touch Not the Cat, which is also part of a motto attributed to several Scottish clans - 'touch not the cat bot a glove', which means to be damn careful when touching the Scottish wildcat. :D)

Gorgeous!

If you don't mind my asking, how do you add color to the grayscale?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I add it on separate layers using layer modes - color, hue, multiply, etc. Whatever looks good for the part I'm coloring. Then I'll eventually merge the layers and paint away as if it's been color the whole time. :)

Ooh, okay. That makes sense. Neat! Those modes are really versatile; I should play with them more. About the only thing I use is multiply on lineart layers to color underneath.

Very cool!

I can't help but think that weapon must be really hard to wield, like a lightsabre. "My sword, it doesn't weigh anything!" *Slices through own arm* "Gah! The terrible pain!" *Passes out*

As for the picture itself, I do really like the smoke/ ash like effect. It reminds me of that sandcastle picture you did a while back.

I love the affect of the ash sword. It's amazing.

Pretty!

I can't wait to see the sword in color, especially. I'm so curious to see what you'll be doing with it. I don't this character from a rock, but I'm kind of developing a fandom thing for her. I want to see her in stories now!!

You and me both! I'm winging this whole thing without a real plan. XD I'm impressed it turned out so good so far - a bunch of black scribbles, Photoshop's Liquify filter a couple of times, lowering the opacity of the layer and filling it with white, then alternate smudging and erasing with a speckled erase set to low opacity, then copying and pasting part of the layer a couple of times near the hilt to thicken the ash a bit there and gently erasing the edges to blend them in. And then ... I get to work on figuring out color, and maybe light. XD Eek!

Matsumoto's cool - she's the lieutenant of the 10th Division, so she's pretty powerful and a tough fighter. She totally owns her sexuality - she wears her uniform like you see above when the other female shinigami cover up - and she teases the hell out of her Captain with her breasts, as he's the youngest Captain and keeps attempting to look and act stern (he gets annoyed with her, not lustful - he's the equivalent of 12 or so, as the shinigami age veeeery slowly). She loves drinking and showing off her body, and when the inevitable manga thing happens and some guy launches himself at her with hearts for eyes, she punches or kicks him before he can touch her, without noticing that she's done it. (In other words, she doesn't get the full-on grope that, say, Orihime gets from her female classmate with a crush on her.)

She's also got more depths, and is the only person that Gin, in my icon, shows any *real* human emotion for, when he's vanishing after betraying Soul Society. We get a little flashback to their relationship - when they appeared in Soul Society as kids (you appear there after you die), saved her from starving to death (if you have great spiritual power, you need food and will starve without it, but regular people don't need to eat), gave her her birthday as the day they met and her life started anew, and then, because he's capricious and tricksy, vanished without warning, and then they both ended up in the 13 Court Guard Companies. At any rate, there's Fodder For Fanfic there. :) So she's tough in some ways, vulnerable in others, does not remain subservient to anyone (she met her Captain, Hitsugaya, when he was a kid, harangued a merchant for trying to cheat him because he was a kid, then harangued Hitsugaya for not standing up for himself XD), and as a character is allowed to be sexual without being either punished for it, or be subservient or a reward to some man. Oh, and is affectionate to her female friends without any of that rivalry crap that is so often seen in fictional depictions of female relationships.

Aaaand, because Bleach is a shounen book, in the most recent fight she was in, she got taken out pretty quickly so that the guys could be heroic I HATE YOU FOR THAT KUBO TITE.

Not a criticism

You are probably too young for this reference - she looks like Honey West - a blonde detective - hell on wheels (as I remember her) and one of the few competent TV femailes

*googles*

Huh. You know, it's entirely possible the original character design (http://www.bleachwallpaper.info/images/wallpapers/matsumoto-rangiku-9002.jpeg) was based on her - the coloring, the eyebrows, and the mole are almost exactly perfect. Matsumoto's hair is darker orange than blonde, but her eyes are blue, her eyebrows are cocked like that, and the mole is in the exact same spot. Interesting!
