Note to self-kanzashi for the doll people

YES!!!! :D

(Are there a lot of doll people there? Must be, if you're considering doll-kanzashi...)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There's not a lot, but I think that at some point, every single one of them came by my table and said they'd buy doll-sized kanzashi. :D

Doll People: More money than sense. TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF US.

(The shoes I am wearing right now: $20, two years old, serviceable black synthetic leather, very scuffed. The shoes my Yo-SD Clara is wearing right now: more than $40, just purchased, pristine, and real red leather with heart ties.)

There were some doll people set up selling doll bits across the hall from me, and they gave me an SD-size head with no eyes* to use for scale purposes. And another one came by and gave me two tiny metal clip barrettes to glue kanzashi to.

What's the size right under SD? The one who gave me the head said kanzashi that were the right size for SDs would also work for the next-smaller size, but I have of course TOTALLY FORGOTTEN what it was, other than it started with an M.

* As they apologetically pointed out, they have to pay for the heads with spaces for eyes. XD I can see now that I'll have to also get an inexpensive wig for it so I can take photos of it for selling them online.

What's the size right under SD?

MSD = Mini Super Dollfie. And smaller than that are the Yo-SDs. (And there are dolls even smaller than the Yos, but not made by Volks. Think you could make a kanzashi scaled to a four-inch Puki Puki?)

I'll have to also get an inexpensive wig for it so I can take photos of it for selling them online.

I'll gladly trade you an SD-size wig for a kanzashi or two. We can talk. (And I also have some eyes I don't like, if you want to cut eyeholes into the head and install 'em yourself.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure about a four-inch one. XD To make one for smaller than an MSD, I'd have to use thin fabric (possible) and tweezers, like the real kanzashi artists do (not yet possible). :D

I'll gladly trade you an SD-size wig for a kanzashi or two.

Ooh, cool! Thanks! :) I may hold off on eyes for a while - at the moment I sort of like the blank mannequin look for modeling purposes. :)

tweezers, like the real kanzashi artists do

What, no magnifying glass? ;)

I have to fight the Battle of the Post Office 2008 sometime this week, so I'll put the wig in the mail to you. Will also send the eyes in case you want them. I think I have your address from when I used to be [livejournal.com profile] rgbrobbie (and you can defriend RGB and friend Ro, if you'd like), but if not, I'll PM you for it.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :)

I moved in June - if the address you have isn't 76110*, then you need the new one.

* Used to be 76120

Whoops, then I do need your address. You can email it to:
robinschin AT aol-dot-com

I'm hooked into the Southern California doll community, so if you ever want to try non-convention sales, I can "agent" for you in the greater Los Angeles area.

Oooh, doll person! So maybe you know the answer to this question: is there any good source online for patterns for SD clothes? Especially boy-type clothes? (The last thing I need is another project, but I'm halfway considering making something for someone for Xmas.)

[identity profile] ro-anshi.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, the free site I know of is:

http://twilightarms.com/doll/dollfie_patterns.html

The patterns are okay BUT I always need to modify, adjust and tweak - a lot - when I'm using them for my own dolls. Do you have access to the doll in question to check fit?

For pay-patterns, I really love The Patchwork Pansy (available on eBay; here's a long link to her SD sized patterns:
http://stores.ebay.com/The-Patchwork-Pansy_Super-Dollfie-BJD-Patterns_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZ1QQfsubZ8QQftidZ2QQtZkm). I have made the boy's poet shirt and the fit was ALMOST perfect (had to adjust the cuffs). I've also made a couple of the girl things, and one Yo outfit. If you decide to buy, message Patchwork Pansy first because most of her patterns can be purchased as a downloadable PDF, so you won't have to wait for the mail.

Good luck!

The trouble is, I don't have access to the doll in question - it's in response to one of those yule wish things people leave on their LJs. I guess I can always make her some icons, but I have some pretty scraps left over from a costume I made for a con a couple of years ago, and I was thinking it would be easy to make a kimono for her little wardrobe-less guy. I would definitely feel much better if I could fit it on the doll!

(And the links to the individual items on that twilight arms page are busted ... boo hoo, no kimono ... . It may have to be icons after all!)

Thank you very much for the help!

[identity profile] ro-anshi.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
boo hoo, no kimono

Their links are all messed up now, but I do have the ones from before the redesign that actually WORK:

SD/SD 13 Boy kimono (http://trimline.addr.com/undead/kimono.htm)

And the kimono is one of the (few) patterns that pretty much works without tweaking and/or having a doll to fit it on.

Have fun!

I hoped that it would be a no-brainer for fit ... you are awesome! Thanks!

[identity profile] ro-anshi.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You are welcome! :)

And I've actually made the kimono pattern four times - twice (pretty much) as-is, and twice modified - and it comes out nice. Good luck!

If you made doll-kanzashi, I'd have to find the money for them, definitely. :D
