I'm watching Storm Chasers on the Discovery Channel, which follows two teams of storm chasers as they, well, chase storms. One of the teams is made up of the guys behind tornadovideos.net, and the leader of that crew bears at times an uncanny resemblance to Captain Jack Harkness.

And of course, I could totally see Captain Jack doing stormchasing especially if it were aliens influencing the weather.

I just started watching that show, too.

That TIV guy is driving me batty. He's way too eager to jump when he should be slowing down and figuring where would be best to go.

I was wondering, would it be possible to fit any useful sensors into a tennis ball? Mount a tennis ball gun onto the back of a truck and you could fire those things pretty far, far enough to get into some of the tornados they've gotten close to. It'd be easier than trying to drop sensors on the ground in front of one.

I read a book called Stormchasers last year that had the TIV guy in it. He struck me as the sort of gleefully crazy guy that the guy who was building the bear suit was. I'd forgotten he was an IMAX filmmaker until seeing this. The book only dealt with the TIV I, I think.

But would the tennis ball survive the trip through the tornado?

Not sure, I don't have the science. But surely there's something useful in the idea.

It's certainly more in line with the tornadovideos.net guys' style. I can just see Reed in the truck's flatbed screaming gleefully at the tornado chasing behind them as he fills it with balls/sensors.
