Look!

What is it? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Or is it ... a totally working RSS parser that includes working HTML tags in the "What's New?" section?

Plz to not be harshing my squee by pointing out the page doesn't validate* or any of the myriad design flaws** or the appearance of the blogs themselves***. In fact, the most appropriate sorts of comments here would be the sort that are like "OMG U R SO AWESOME!!11!!" because YOU DO NOT KNOW how much beating my head against the desk this stupid thing caused me.****

* It can't, thanks to the catalog search box. Fixing the box to validate breaks it to search.

** We're in the process of redesigning the site, but the appearance of the site is not something we're looking at for a long time to come. We're focusing on the preliminaries first, which involve usability studies, focus groups, etc.

*** My next task: to get with the subject librarians and work out what we all want and don't want on the blogs and to create a new set of customized templates.

**** In fact, I think this calls for Kenpachi.

Seriously, it's such a relief to get this damn thing working.

I know the feeling well. ^_^ I have just been handed a Web application (written in asp/VB with Perl files, Crystal reports, interfacing with an SQL database which draws it's information from a Mainframe) and was told to, "make it work". Not only is the web site being migrated but so is the database AND the mainframe! IF I can get this all working by the switchover date it will be a miracle. XD

Yikes! I only have to deal with malicious subject guides. I think they change the tab order COMPLETELY AT RANDOM to mess with me. I figured out that it was the tab order changing that periodically messes up the guides, but for the life of me, I have no idea how or why they change or how to fix it.

I don't even remember how I figured out it was the tab order that was the problem. :/

Err, congratulations, it's a webpage? :D I wouldn't even know where to start with something like that. Sooo...

OMG U R SO AWESOME!!11!!

:D

Basically, I took this blog's entries (http://blogs.lib.tcu.edu/blogs/whatsnew/) and fed them to the What's New section of the library website. Which seems like it ought to be easy, but...

That's awesome. And you did it on your lonesome!

THAT IS SO RIGHT!!! (Well, sometimes you just need a bit of self-aggrandizement! XD)

Once I switched to the Atom feed, I was able to pull out just the text of the post. After that, it was a matter of figuring out how to search and replace using regular expressions in VBscript. Wordpress is way too damn fond of those curly quotes.
