Advice!

Brian Stelfreeze giving his sage advice on establishing panels at the party I went to this weekend.

I want the page with the talking buildings!

LOL - Establishing shots have their place and all, but it sounds like someone's been reading too much Scott McCloud ^_^ (or not enough)

Mind unpacking what you mean by the McCloud comment? Brian's talking about his working style and what he prefers. (I'm just slightly confused about what it has to do with that.)

Oh, I was wondering where Brian's editor got the idea that there HAS to be an establishing shot, and I've got Scott M's "Making Comics" on the brain right now. ^_^

I mean, there's lots of ways of establishing place other than making the first panel all about This Is Where You Are, but establishing shots are one of the "There are no rules and here they come".

Either way, Brian's comments are awesome - I can imagine that first panel full of word balloons and buildings ^_^

Oh, OK. I thought you were talking about Brian there and couldn't quite figure out how it applied. I haven't had enough sleep, can you tell. :D

Right after I shut the camera off, there was a general consensus from the peanut gallery that perhaps the correct way to show Where You Are in that case was ... a small box saying "New York." :)

My preferred method as well. Sure a picture's worth a thousand words, but do you really need a thousand words to say "New York"? ;-)
