004 - White Flowers Named for topic #4 on the list of 100 Topics to Draw translated from the Japanese by kugen. It's named for the pattern on his kimono - those little hexagons have small five-petal flowers in them.

The pencil is actually grey, but the scanner tinted it violet when it scanned it in and I liked it so much I left it. XD

[edit] Oh yeah, the enormous watermarked signature is because I uploaded this same one to DevinatArt and I wanted to ensure that anyone trying to right-click and donwload it and take credit for it would be forced to crop it down. :)

Oh, wow. That's really beautiful.

The next time you're procrastinating, how about doing portraits of the BK characters in that style? Maybe starting with Ellie, since I'm sure her character design can be polished from the last take and she's going to appear in the next set.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I may have to try that. If I can get them looking really nice when rendered, I can probably then easily cartoon-ize them (for want of a better word).

But beofre I do that, I need to slap color on the Saiyuki band picture, because I figured I could make each guy in it a bookmark and sell those at A-Kon.

I could probably make a lot of my pieces into bookmarks. Hmmmmm. *ponders*

SO PRETTY YOWZA.

[identity profile] i-smile.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow, the textured paper makes it look really, really impressive.

...well, that and the drawing ability (like on those spikes, man. And the outfit). :D But the paper!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's bog-standard charcoal paper, fairly cheap, comes in a pad of several colors. :) I like using it because it's inexpensive enough that if I screw up, I'm not out $5 for a sheet of really nice paper.

As for the spikes, it's all about that secondary reflection. :)

That's absolutely astonishingly beautiful. The dignity of the pose, as well as the awesome artistic talent. And the movement.

What a nice start to a Monday. ^_^

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, NICE.

I love how you fixed the little problem before where you couldn't tell where his arm had been cut off--now you can definitely see where the arm stops. The clothing is also incredibly good; I love the way you did the folds on his obi and how you did the spikes on his shoulder--the shadow work is great.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I happy with the spikes myself and the way he actually looks three-dimensional. The sword doens't fit into the hilt quite right, and I'll probably work at that a little more, but I"m not sure how much I can do to fix it that won't require redrawing many *other* bits. :)

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the sword is kind of off--it looks a bit like he's squeezing it so it's squishing in like a sponge (yeah, me gud English speaker, bleh). But there's really no easy fix--the only thing you could do would be to mke the fingers of his hand longer, which would fix the way the sword looks--I think it's more of a hand thing than a sword thing.

And yeah, he looks so 3D. Just whoa. The shading is great.

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! I figured out what looks weird with the hand and sword thing--you can't see his thumb! You should be able to see his thumb, so if you add that in, it should fix the sword-in-hilt-looks-weird thing.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right about that; I'll see what I can do. The other part is that the blade doesn't fit into the hilt at exactly the right angle - it should go straight and smoothly in, but it's canted slightly. :)

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It is slightly, but I think adding the thumb in will lessen the look of that a lot, just because it's something else to draw the eye--it'll be such white space in the midst of so much color that the eye will look at that instead of following the line of the sword, since it'll break it up.

...wow, it actually sounds like I have a clue what I'm talking about. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's part of why I love art: as long as you can justify it, people will believe you. XD Thank you higher education for giving me the ability to justify anything!

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
*snicker* So what's my excuse, then? I haven't taken an art class since junior high. XDDD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You are obviously a natural genius. XD

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Works for me! >XD

Gorgeous

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that violet color is lovely indeed, gives it a very old-Japanese feel methinks. And I still adore his expression.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Heehee. I somehow managed to change his mouth from the sketches, so instead of just pissed off he not looks like he's trying to look pissed off but is instead suppressing laugh. Inu probably just did something really stupid, like step on a rake and smack himself in the head.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
* er "...he *now* looks..." and "suppressing *a* laugh." Which you could probably figure out from context anyway.

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I love it when someone manages to capture the anime-ness and still make the character seem real.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Have you seen [livejournal.com profile] pzb's work? She does realistic versions of anime characters, mostly Inu-Yasha ones. Her DA page is here (http://pzb.deviantart.com/), and these are some of my favorites:

http://www.deviantart.com/view/12251277/ (ok, so I commissioned that one, but the texture on that is EVEN BETTER in real life)
http://www.deviantart.com/view/5607444/ (Sesshoumaru is my internet boyfriend)
http://www.deviantart.com/view/5307649/ (OMG that midsection...)
http://www.deviantart.com/view/5525327/ (Nice emotion in that one)

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, that is cool, but actually that's a little too real for me-- it's the skirting thing, which you do sometimes and [livejournal.com profile] rubyd does at times, that I always really love.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Stuff that makes you go "So realistic! ... wait, nobody has eyes like that in real life..." XD I really love shading like this, but I think the reason I don't do more of it is that BY GOD one day I WILL figure out how to paint something that I like!

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I love paint. I should paint again but I can't afford to until my 3-year-old learns valuable skills like conserving materials. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't grok it in the same way that I grok monochrome work with pencil and charcoal. I think it's that I can't really plan ahead to say that yes, mixing this and this will produce this. The times I manages to produce something cool with paint, traditional or digital, seem to be more in spite of anything I do rather than because of anything I do.

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
...which is exactly why I love paint, hee.

[identity profile] artist-luver.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
that is gorgeous! nicely done! must have taken forever. good job!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not as long as you'd think, actually, as long as the preliminary sketch is worked out really well. :) Which I did in the various in-progress bits I posted, as well as a few more that I didn't post because they only had small refinements. The shading itself is probably about 2-3 hours work; hard to say exactly because I stopped and ate dinner in there. Scanning it in and putting the two parts together probably took an hour to an hour and a half - longer than usual because I ended up rescanning about three times when the edges kept not being the right colors to match and I couldn't adjust them or cut-and-paste enough in Photoshop to hide them well. :)

[identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know the character at all, but that's a gorgeous drawing. So lovely.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Sesshoumaru's the best part of Inu-Yasha for me :)

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Inuyasha, despite the scary fandom, is really a lot of fun (and, like so many things, has a loose base in Journey to the West.). Sesshoumaru's a bit Sanzo-ish.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Tall, light-haired, emotionally unavailable, ATTITUDE PROBLEM, no wonder I like 'em both. XD

although my other fictional boyfriends seem to be short, dark-haired, emotionally unavailable and with ATTITUDE PROBLEMS, so I guess there's a common thread there... XD

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. Though Sanzo's a little humbler, frighteningly enough.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sanzo's so arrogant in his humility. XD Sesshoumaru's got no conflicting issues there, though. He's just naturally the best and there's nothing to discuss. XD

[identity profile] hkbatosai.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you and your mad drawing skills...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Heehee, thanks!

[identity profile] pratyeka.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Gorgeous. Procrastination is obviously the answer.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I can be amazingly productive if there's something I'm trying to avoid. And you know the thing I was trying to avoid? Took two hours to do. I spent like 10 hours over 2 days on this thing, to avoid 2 hours' worth of work...

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's incredibly gorgeous. I particularly like the easy flow of the drapery, the way the hair and sword and sleeves all sweep backward to give the pose a sense of movement to fill the space, and the way the eyeline (?) points in that direction too.

(Uh, sorry. Art vocabulary limited here.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-05-23 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! From what I understand, compositionally you don't usually want your character heading off the page, but if you balance it with a strong element going back the other direction, it, er, balances.

Or you play with the character heading off - the photography book I learned this guideline from showed a picture of a woman off to one side heading off the edge of the photo, but she had a very strong, direct gaze at the viewer with a little smile playing around her lips and the caption explained that it worked in this one because she was sending an invitation to the viewer to follow her. I suppose in this one, Sesshoumaru's warning the viewer *not* to follow him. XD
