My TiVo keeps taping shows and movies about lesbians. Do you think it's trying to tell me something?

If you're unaware of the way TiVo works, it tapes suggestions that it thinks you might like based on shows you watch and rate, and sometimes based on the actors in said shows. Which might be what's spurring the recent spate of various lesbian-themed shows and movies, because I can't think why it's taping them based on my normal viewing habits, which tends to heavily feature Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, and House Hunters International.

Don't think I hit it. I also haven't checked the cast roster to see what's up with ... er, whatever series it is (I can't even remember now!).

Wild (very wild) guess: Torchwood, maybe? For homosexual themes. (Err...or at least a homosexual pairing, as I understand it.)

Yeah. I just never think of Torchwood as a show with gay themes, as to me it's a nominally-SF* show that happens to have characters with alternate sexualities. But I guess others may not see it that way. XD

Were I to listen to the mass fandom, I would think that it was all about Jack and Ianto's True Love. (Kind of like how Heroes fandom told me how fascinating Mohinder and Sylar are, yet I only survive by picturing Mohinger shirtless and chanting "BBBBRRRRRAAAAAAIIIIINNNNNNSSSS!!!!!!") Thankfully, most Torchwood fans I know personally think of it as you do, as far as I know.

But you know it was tagged for homosexual themes as soon as there was making out!

Unlikely, since TiVo isn't taping lots of lesbian dramas for me, at least not that I noticed.

On the other hand, maybe I've rated enough other non-lesbian things thumbs up that TiVo is putting more weight on those things.

telophase do you remember which channels these shows are on? TiVo thinks I get LOGO, but the shows it tried to record there (possibly at my direction) were blank, as is the channel when I switch to it.

The five minutes of one that I watched consisted of lesbians being Deeply Serious about their relationships at each other. I had to get out of there, as I can't stand people being Deeply Serious about Relationships in TV shows, unless there's also heavy explosives involved somehow.

LJ ate my comment, so I'll just say that doesn't encourage me to get TiVo any time soon. Amazon and Netflix "suggestions" are bad enough. :)

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at TiVo's suggestions. :) For the most part, they're shows that I'd at least consider watching once, to try out. Occasionally I get things like this popping up inexplicably, but it's uncommon enough that I remark on it. :)

ETA: The one thing that every TiVo owner I know wishes is that they'd include a setting for "I like this show and wish you'd tape more like it, but STOP TAPING THIS AS I HAVE ALREADY WATCHED IT! I OWN THE DVD FER CRYING OUT LOUD!" It catches almost every showing of Spirited Away, for instance, since it's gathered I like Miyazaki, but I own the DVD! Aaaaaargh!

Amazon suggestions being bad I can kind of understand. I forget which book I bought along with The Surrender, but thought it would be funny if lots of other people did the same.

With Netflix and TiVo, I would expect the collaborative filtering to do a pretty good job...

...except for movies with only a few ratings, and thus when it gets recommended, such suggestions should be taken with many grains of salt.

Maybe that your wardrobe needs more flannel? ;-)

I'd be a lot more interested in lesbian drama if there was less Serious Relationship than you describe.
