THE FINAL ITEM IN THE YUUKO BOX!

My brain hurts from headache and from working out technical issues with databases* so it's time to do something else! I present you with... The final item in the Yuuko box!

I consider this the heart of the box: these are the postcards I asked y'all to write. Each of them represents a memory that the (fictional) writer gave up, voluntarily or involuntarily, to Yuuko in exchange for ... something. In all cases but one, we don't know the details of the exchange. Maybe the person wanted to give up the memory itself. Or there was something else they wanted to have/get rid of that this memory was the payment for. All we know is that Yuuko takes payment equal to the wish granted.

(With bonus toes, as I found the picture funny!)

The postcards were wrapped in this package, with a tag explaining that they were memories exchanged at Yuuko's shop.

I'm posting the text of the postcards here, as I think more people will read them here than if I make them click through to the Google doc holding them. If you're an author and wish to identify yourself, please do so! And thank you so much!

Yuuko Box Postcards

Each of these postcards is a memory found in Yuuko's warehouse, either given up in exchange for something the client thought was of equal value, or taken as payment for another service.

---------

Postcard with blue dots on one side, written in Japanese:

Dear Older Brother,

Hello. Are you doing well?
During Golden Week, I took the Shinkansen to Ōsaka. When I was at the Shin- Ōsaka train station, I lost my return ticket. That caused me a lot of trouble. Then I met up with my friends. We went to the Nanzenji Temple and saw a Mikoshi.
Well, until next time.

Umeko

---------------

Calico cat on one side:

To Peggy Miller
5134 Johnson St
Philos, SD 57698

Dear Mom,

Found this postcard in a pile of stationery I've never gotten around to using. Doesn't this cat look almost exactly like Patches? I miss her sometimes even though it's been years. The book Old Cat comes to mind:

"Remember our stories
When fur and bones
and tail of me are gone."

You gave me that book for Christmas on year, remember?

Love,
Clare

-----------------

Postcard with a night view of Yokohama Bay Bridge:

Dear Jane,

Gues what! I'm getting married!!! Yū propsed to me while we were eating (a very romantic) dinner in the restaurant on the observatory foor of andmark Tower. (There's a nice view of the bridge on this postcard from there.) His proposal was so romantic! We're going to have two weddings, a Western-styled one in America and a traditional Japanese one here. I'm so happy!! When I return to Chicago, I'll tell you all about it!

Love ya and see ya soon!

Margaret

P.S. Be my Maid of Honor! :)

--------

Postcard from the Pittsburgh Aviary, with 2 Rothschild's Mynahs:

My darling N--

birds of a feather, just like the two of us!

Missing you--
with all my love--
Isabeau

------------

Postcard with 19th century photograph of Sioux women and a child:

Hi Auntie Beverley--

doesn't that little on look just like Cousin Midge's baby? Talk about history repeating--too funny!

XOXO
Margie

---------------

Postcard of the Chateau de Chillon in Montreaux, Switzerland:

Ian Childress
2706 Crescent Point Ln
Portland, OR 97214 USA

Darling--

We stopped for lunch here on our way into Geneva. I couldn't help but notice that the lake was the same color as your eyes the day you asked me to marry you. As you can tell, I miss you terribly.

Love always,
Liza

P.S. I should be home a few days early - won't that be nice! --L

[This one came with more details: "The card is from a wife away on business to her husband, but she never actually mailed it. Arriving early, she caught him in bed with her best friend, ultimately resulting in a messy divorce. As a price for forgetting all the bad things, Liza must give up the best memory of the relationship."]

---------------

Postcard from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, with a picture of a lobed comb jellyfish:

Yesterday Jolene went crazy barking when I walked her on the beach. She was standing over this thing that had washed up. It was all bloated from the water, but I could clearly see the tag on the collar. The address was yours. It wasn't a dog or a cat. What are you doing out there? Please be more careful. I buried it deep, and said a prayer.

--K.D.

Postcard of the Jefferson Memorial in cherry-blossom season:

Mom,

Just a line to say how much I treasure the time we spent here on Saturday. It's the first time since Dad died that I felt like a kid again.

All my love,
Rose

Postcard of restored carousel horses:

I was in Brooklyn near the Brooklyn Bridge to see the Telectroscope. It's like a live video feed that lets you wave to people in London. Cool and weird. I also had a great view of the bridge and Manhattan. While walking around I passed this carousel. Until it finds a permanent home it spins, riderless, behind a guard rope in an open warehouse building. I signed a petition for it.

I miss you but I know New York City is where I'm meant to be.

Love, V

watching all the items in this yuuko box appear has been so cool. what a fun and awesome project!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yaay! It was quite fun. Seriously headache-inducing at times, and it got way bigger than I intended it to, because I was dwelling so much on the bits that weren't happening for me (tear-stained diaries, the Underground map of the imagination, the bits of the planner I left out, etc.) that I didn't notice how much else I'd accumulated. XD

I had so much fun coing up with a story to fit the one damn postcard I could find.

I wrote the jellyfish one, inspired by the hoax or decayed raccoon that had been photographed and looked like a weird bird-dog monster.

Yay! The post I've been waiting for! Somehow the carousel horses look even freakier in your photo than they did on the card in person. *g*

I've been enjoying the posts. My favorite parts include the puffy stars, rock crystal candy dreams, and some of the packaging.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good - I was wondering if the crystallized dreams was too cheesy. XD I was torn between that and saying it was chunks from the Big Rock Candy Mountain, but then started wondering how well-known that was anymore, and the dreams sounded a bit more xxxHolicesque anyway. :)

I ended up with more than could fit into the jar. I need to figure out where I put the rest - they're just plain sugar crystals, but nice to savor while surfing the web. XD

A friend of mine also liked the rock crystal candy dreams and didn't think it cheesy. If they came from Big Rock Candy Mountain would unicorns come to the recipient and demand a kidney?

I will admit to letting out a small squee when I saw this post. I was waiting for this item. (The toes were a nice touch in the picture. :D) All of the messages/stories are interesting. A couple of them made me sad when I read them. I liked seeing all of the pictures on the postcards. (I sent the Japan/Japanese-based ones.)

I was wondering how big the box was since the list of items in it seemed to go on forever.

Thanks so much for sharing all these with us! We probably had almost as much fun as the recipient!

- cho of the cherry-blossom card

(I was hoping to find a more interesting one, but it didn't happen in time ... and then a week later, an unused postcard from Chatham on Cape Cod fell out of a book!)

My apologies for--what with weddings and out of town travel--completely flaking my contribution to this! Glad there was lots of great stuff to go in it!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
No prob! :D

It was fun receiving these in the mail, as I never knew what would show up next. :)
