YES.

You do realize that socialism has been a horrible failure every in instance it has been tried? (Yes, even in Sweden.)

Using the power of government to take wealth from those who produce it (e.g. my family) and give it to those who do not produce it. That's socialism.

Count me out.

The thing is, in practice I'm more fiscally conservative than this quiz produces. It has something to do with the particular questions it asks and the way I interpret them. I'm pretty much like my mother: socially liberal, and fiscally moderate-to-conservative.

ETA: Example - question 1 is "The government should subsidize struggling museums, theaters, and artists." I put Strongly Agree on that, because I feel strongly about museums and theatre being educational and I feel that that's a HUGE priority - we need to educate the populace way the hell more than it is, and that's a good use of taxpayer dollars. Subsidizing every individual artist that comes along? Not so much.

But this quiz is equating museums and theatre with arts/entertainment, rather than arts/education, and puts me squarely in the PERMISSIVE section for that answer.

Yeah, that quiz is pretty bogus, I'll admit. Those things are really for entertainment purposes only.

I guess it would be rude of me to point out that social liberalism hasn't worked out too well in practice, either... (- __ -);

Er, the concept that everyone deserves the same basic human rights?

What's truly scary is that this one is better than the half a dozen or so other quizzes out there doing the same thing.

(I land on the libertarian/capitalist borderline, not that anyone would have trouble guessing)

Ahhh! A Socialist! HSSSSS!

See that (A) in the upper right? My point is smack dab on that.

Ah, and I would put Strongly Disagree on that same question. I also feel strongly that museums, theaters, and artists are very important. But I feel even more strongly that government shouldn't be allowed to blackmail it's citizens for the funds to subsidize anything, it's up to individuals to choose what they feel deserves their support.

So for me it was an accurate quiz. I really do belong up there in that area. That's me, your friendly neighborhood anarcho-capitalist.

Which smacks you right into a Catch-22: if the population is not educated, how can they judge what is the best education?

The scientific community runs into this constantly: people who have no clue what research really is who call for funding to be slashed because they can see no immediate practical use for whatever it is being researched. And unfortunately it's a vital part of scientific and technological progress that the big leaps forward that benefit people are often made because someone connects the dots between the little bits of knowledge that previously had no immediate benefit. And a general populace that does not understand that, which is voting on science and technology matters and funding scares the hell out of me.

[identity profile] tprjones.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but there is a solution to that apparent Catch 22. You see, generally speaking, in a vigorous free market economy smarter people do better. Sure there are other factors that can make success easier, like having family capital to start with, and being motivated and disciplined is also a big plus, but smarts count. So in a long-tern free-market free-for-all, the smarter people will tend to be the ones to end up with the extra capital to spend on things like that.

Although I do admit it makes me shudder to think about the William Gates Museum of Natural History.

Heh, snap - except I got 80%/21%, which makes me an Even Bigger Socialist. *g*

(one day I will actually go and read Marx et al and figure out why these quizzes keep landing me there)

Democrat here. Mostly because I'm of the opinion that civil rights are important, but that comes with the right to totally fuck your life up and the rest of us shouldn't be penalized if you do. *is not a big fan of welfare for people perfectly capable of fending for themselves*

Most of my LJ friends who have taken this thing turn up in roughly the same area. I was a little higher up (just over the line into Dem territory) than many, possibly because my line of work makes me slightly more cynical on the effectiveness of government in running things ... .

You and I scored identically (down to the percentage-points), although man, some of those questions are not well done.

I was in Democratic territory, but it was about two years ago. I wonder where I am now. But that quiz is not well-done at all.
