Why more of you should be watching Kyou Kara Maoh...
...This is Gwendal.

He's one of Wolfram's brothers - there are three of them: Gwendal, Conrad, and Wolfram, all from different fathers, as their mother is much-married. Gwendal tends to have a bit of a stick up his ass, as anyone who was forced to be brothers with Wolfram and have a mother like Celi would. And he tends to take matters of governance quite seriously - for his mother is the former Demon King (ed: see explanaton of ruling by divine right here) - and until Yuri takes over the throne, she's technically the ruler of the kingdom. But since she's off flirting, most of the work tends to fall to Gwendal. Who is also attempting, mostly unsuccessfully, to teach Yuri to rule.
Which is probably why he has this pained look so often.

Gwendal pretty much had a stick up his ass as a young man, also, but he did evolve a way to calm himself down after various insane encounters with his family...

He knits.*
The redhead is his cousin Anissina, who is a mad inventor, and who makes Gwendal test all her inventions. Gwendal occasionally manages to throw Gunter under the bus and turn Anissina's testing intentions towards Gunter instead, but only occasionally.

She's been tormenting Gwendal since she was a young lady, too, which is probably one of the reasons he needs to knit so much.

Oh - one more thing. That's Gwendal's bedroom. He has a deep, deep weakness for CUTE THINGS.
* Yes, yes, yes, he's crocheting in this scene. He knits when he's older.

And makes knitting motions with his hands when he's under stress.

And he wouldn't be able to escape. Because his entire family would approve. In addition to the fact that he rarely escapes anyway. As would Gunter. And Yuri would likely think it was great while also being utterly clueless about what was going on.

Those would be smart, capable and pretty babies. And utterly insane on every possible level.

(Anissina secretly drugged Gwendal so she could test the machine on him without ruining the surprise.)

P.S. on reading this book my first thought was totally "GWENDAL KNITTED THIS PROTAGONIST."

The question is: Who built it's little toy city?

The backbone of Shin Makoku's economy is the brisk trade in knitted scarfs Gwendal does with Canadians.

Also, I'm pretty sure that all these KKM posts are going to have two effects:
1) I'm finally going to watch that disc of episodes I got from
2) I'm really going to regret not picking up the series back when Rightstuf had their uber-Geneon sale. :(

It's a good thing he's too stupid to come up with that idea.

But Yuuri is also weak against adorably cute children and animals and giant monsters! Lucky for them that evildoers in KKM have generally been too secretly squishy to be that devious. If any successful graduates from Evil Overlord Academy ever do show up to wreak havoc with kawaiiiiiiiiiii, it will clearly be up to Greta to SAVE THEM ALL.

It's rather crazy.
Like a crazy thing.

ETA: editing to add my adoration for Gwendal, who is knitted out of love, and would probably like to keep his entire family, i.e. the entire population of the castle or possibly the country, in a small box to carry around with him to protect them and keep them from doing things to stress him out, i.e. everything. Also I love that Gwendal, like everyone in KKM, is hilarious and dorky and squishily insane while still entirely capable of outsmarting you and kicking your ass in a competent, badass manner, at least if you are not a fluffy cute thing.

And ♥♥♥ for Gwendal. XD

Or you are Anissina. In which case, he is fleeing from you in terror, possibly under the pretext of "state business," or he is currently being your

But one day, she will invent something that saves the entire kingdom
by accidentand he will no longer be allowed to object.Actually, I think that's how they end up married. She presents a brilliant plan and invention and he is so awed that he unthinkingly says "marry me" in that stupefied way people in fiction sometimes do, in front of everyone, and before he realizes what he's said, she has thought through the pros and cons (the grumpiness, she is used to it) and accepted. And he is trapped.
