Favor to ask...

...of those people who like writing postcards.

If you'd rather not know something that's going to be in the Yuuko box I auctioned off for [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry, then DON'T CLICK THE CUT. But if you think you might want to participate in it, go ahead...

I'm starting (slowly, slowly!) to assemble the Yuuko box and I'd like to include a small collection of postcards from various places with ... let's say they're each a memory that the writer is giving up in payment for something from Yuuko's shop. They're not written to Yuuko, they're regular postcards with a short message from someone to a friend or family member, but they'll be bundled together with a tag explaining the significance. The memories can be large and important, or small, daily ones, mundane, prosaic, or supernatural. If you have questions, ask away. (ETA: Slightly better explanation here.)

If you think you'd be interested in contributing, I'd need to receive the postcard(s) before the end of the month. Post and let me know if you'll be sending one, so I can both look out for it, and so I can give you my address. :D

ETA: When it comes to the Address Question as brought up in this comment, the answer is: Do what you will! :)

---
For those who don't read xxxHolic: Yuuko is the proprietor of a Mysterious Shop [tm] who grants people's wishes ... often in unexpected ways. The warning that you should be careful what you wish for is to be well heeded! She accepts payment in keeping with what her service is worth - it could be an object, or a memory, or, well, anything whose value matches the value of what the client received.

I'll play! I'm a little confused on what you're talking about, though. Is it like Post Secret or something?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's just a regular postcard. Each represents a memory given up to Yuuko in exchange for whatever service she rendered the writer. :) So the message should have something slightly more concrete than just "Having a nice time, wish you were here!" It can be something really important to the writer, or something trivial. (Or, come to think of it, if one person gave up a *bunch* of trivial memories, that's just as affecting as someone giving up one very important memory. Hm...)

I'll post my address in a screened comment, so you'll get it in LJ notification. If you don't get it, let me know and I'll email it.

Cool, thanks! :D I'll post my new address in a screened comment, since I don't think you have it yet. If you don't get it, let me know.

I have a couple postcards from the early 1900s (1902-1905) that I picked up at an estate sale; none of them have anything remarkable on them (mostly they're just landmarks of a cross-country trip), but I'd totally be willing to send one your way.

One of them, which breaks my heart a little, was sent from Dresden in 1904.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooooo, lovely! I'd love to have one, if you're so inclined! :D (Address in screened comment.)

I'll do it ... the trouble is, they'll all be addressed to you ... . Do you want to fake this up by somehow obtaining something to use as a made-up postmark, and I can send you the postcard in an envelope, with a made-up address?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I was debating over the idea, then figured if necessary I'd print up mailing label stickers and pop them over my address. :D

So the answer is: do what you will! (And I think you've got my current address, as I've received postcards here...)

Thank you!

OK. If I can find two different postcards, I'll see if I can get TYL to do one also, and send them both in an envelope. And we have a crazy selection of stamps around the house right now, so they can be stamped differently.

If you'd like one from Houston, let me know, I'm in. Although if you could throw in an example of what sort of content you are expecting on these that would help a little.

Also, I have an idea that could maybe get you some from other intersting places. I'll see what I can do.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, thanks! :D

As far as what I'm expecting ... it's sort of vague so I can see what people come up with, because I know that often they'll come up with something that I'd never have thought of. I'm envisioning that each of you guys sending me a postcard will come up with a character to write the postcard (nothing fancy, just a name, really) and write it from their POV to someone else the character knows, perhaps recounting an event from a trip, since postcards tend to be sent when travelling, but it doesn't have to be confined to vacations.* The conceit is that when they give the card to Yuuko, they've given up that memory in exchange for whatever she does for them, so they no longer have it.

Er, does that help any? I can attempt to blather more, if you'd like.

* My brain is apparently into either sappy romance of the musical Grease right now, since the only concrete example I can think of would be a quick recounting of a summer romance, which would vanish from the person's memory after their encounter with Yuuko. :/

Ooooh, this sounds like fun. And I have a huge collection of weird, tacky, or mind-bogglingly dull postcards picked up while travelling...

Nifty, thanks! :D

Is your mailing address still the same? I have the one I sent the Pretty Princess Legolas doujinshi too buried somewhere in Gmail, but I can't remember if that was before or after you moved to the new place. And I can send multiple postcards if you like, I can alter my handwriting pretty wildly and have quite an odd range of cards from the artsty to the tacky-and-mundane...

(If that's the old address, plz. to email the new one? I don't have comment-notification-email turned on 'cause I can't bear the redundant clutter of seeing everything twice...)

[identity profile] wistfulmemory.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get LJ notifications of comments, so I'm not sure I'll be able to see the screened comment.

Also, I was thinking of writing one of the postcards in Japanese if that's alright with you.

Thank you! :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, it's changed since then. And if you're willing to send multiple, I'm thrilled to have them! :D Will email the address. :D

Ooo, in Japanese would be great! :D Shoot me an email at telophase14 (at) gmail and I'll send you my mailing address. :)

I just sent you an e-mail. I'm looking forward to writing these postcards. I already know what I want to write in Japanese. (For some reason, I'm drawing a blank for my English postcard...)

I just got your e-mail, too. I should have them sent out by this Friday at the latest.
