Heh. Just had someone on DA leave crit on the picture of Roy Mustang telling me "the expression could have been done a bit better," which managed to trigger my rant about how when leaving crit you need to leave ACTUAL USEFUL crit and not generalities. We'll see if they respond.

Although since the #1 compliment I've got on it is his expression, the person's got to work to convince me before I do any fixing. His face shape and his right eye are *slightly* off, I know, but I can at least blame those on that nebulous thing called "style" if I don't feel like getting off my ass and fixing them beofre A-Kon.

Heh....yeah, something about FMA fans.... The comments I got on my Ed were all basically "Nice coloring, but it doesn't look like him." Gee...thanks for that. Gah.

"Oooh! You noticed that I WAS NOT ACTUALLY USING THE ANIME OR MANGA STYLE! Good for you!" [livejournal.com profile] tesstrosa ahd much the same thing come up a couple of days ago on her picture of an older Neji (http://www.deviantart.com/view/18312224/): He's too old! His skin is dark and sun exposure causes skin cancer! His eyes are the wrong color! His eyes are different sizes! (Er, no, he's squinting in one eye, people!) She bitched in her LJ about it if you want to go look (http://www.livejournal.com/users/tesstrosa/527014.html). :) (My response there about a tussle I got in over a Sesshoumaru piece is also applicable ehre.)

People are freaking dense. And there are so many times that I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying "Oh yeah? Then you do better." Gah. I swear, I'm ready to start pointing people to a friend's "How to give a helpful Critique." My thing is if you're going to tell me what's wrong with it, TELL me what's really wrong, not just a general "I want to sound important but I don't know jack about what I'm saying."

You know, reading the artist's comments on the piece is generally helpful too..........

The biggest complaint I've heard about people who don't watch/read FMA is that the characters seem expressionless/blank. So. Maybe he has too much personality? XD

Maybe. XD I think it's due in large part to the eyes being the size of normal human eyes and not these huge, liquid, insectile eyeballs that infect most of anime, so they stop being able to understand any emotion that's not in your face.

Maybe. Or maybe they're just crazy.

The faces are less detailed overall. and I wonder if that's some of it. But I do like the normal-sized eyes.
