Random question time...

The manga Hunter x Hunter? How do you say the title? Hunter Versus Hunter? Hunter Ecks Hunter? Hunter By Hunter? Hunter Squared? I've never actually had to say the title out loud but I live in fear that I will one day have to recommend it to someone.

(My mother lives in fear that she will be asked to write a reference letter and have to spell the word "conscientious." We all have our crosses to bear.)

I tend to alternate between Hunter Ecks Hunter and Hunter By Hunter.

I also v. sneakily only recommend it in writing.

Cool. :) I've never seen the anime. I read the scanlations some time ago, but it got bogged down in the video-game-thingy arc where it all seemed like a thin excuse to carefully explain the rules of the related card game they were trying to sell for chapter after chapter after chapter. But now that the translations are coming out, I'm picking them up because I remember how much I liked the first arc.

The video game arc is worth sticking with because it does something REALLY FRICKIN' COOL that I wouldn't dream of spoiling. That's as far as they've animated.

The voice actress who does Gon is the woman who plays Naruto, btw.

Or maybe it's one of those Japanese things that I just don't quite get. Like what's up with "S-class" being used to mark the highest class of whatever set of people/organization/whatever in all this anime? And what does "maru" mean in the names of ships and stuff? *screams in frustration*

The suffix -maru means the generic male, usually translated 'boy'-- feminine equivalent is -ko. So, to use some examples from Naruto, Orochimaru means 'eight-headed dragon boy', Shikamaru means 'deer boy', and Konohamaru means 'Konoha's boy'. A pretty common way of making women's names is random noun + ko. For example, Yukiko is 'snow girl'.

S is short for Super. No, really. Most things have Z-rank as above S, too, because Z is, like, the ultimate and the omega, right? Except for how it totally isn't in English... This is how we get Dragonball Z as the sequel to the original Dragonball. I keep waiting for 'Z' to turn up in Naruto; it's only a matter of time.

The X in Hunter x Hunter is TOTALLY RANDOM AND MAKES NO DAMN SENSE.

Thanks for the answer on "-maru" - I asked a friend who was teaching English in Japan a few years ago and he didn't have an answer. (Random funny note - he's short, blonde, and bearded and aaaaaall the 12-year-old girls in his class were in love with him. He hated that. XD)

I first noticed the "-maru" thing when I read an SF book titled after a spaceship in it which was named the Tom Paine Maru, and then saw it other places.

Another vote for 'Hunter Hunter'. That's the way Gon says it during the next episode previews.

About the X... it seems like it's just a weird punctuation. Episode titles are divided up by them... like ep2 is deai x tomadoi x shukkou, ep3 is puraido x araumi x kettou and so on.

Though maybe it's supposed to be like multiplication...

I was asking a friend about that Chinese tones in pop thing several days before you posted about it, and I have been wondering how to say this one since last Saturday, when I realised that I alternated between pronouncing the X (ecks) and just saying "Hunter Hunter", without actually knowing what was right--it is wonderful to have all of my questions answered in one LJ like this. Next, I'd like to know how long peacocks live, and how much of that life occurs before they are fully grown. :D

Well, as far as I can tell, the websites seem to agree that peacocks live 20-30 years and that the chicks can leave their mother at 6-7 weeks, although they don't say how long it is until they're considered fully adult (although peahens don't usually lay until their 2nd or 3rd year). XD

Working in a comic shop, I use Hunter Ecks Hunter just for the sake of saying the full title and avoiding confusion for both my boss and any customers to whom I recommend it.

I don't think they include any pronunciation notes in the title as they do for I's (pronounced 'eyes' as in plural "I"). It's another cute romance comedy with some REALLY great fanservice for the guys (and girls if you're in to that ^_-)

I wonder if there's any fanbreviations of it like Furuba or Tenten (Tenjou Tenge). Hunhun!

It's 'Hunter hunter'. The 'x' I used to know what it was there for...I had read a whole aritcle on it somewhere... *Rummages through stuff* Ah!

I say just Hunter Hunter. I refer to it like that because of the sidenote in one of the manga where he says that he named it Hunter x Hunter because he heard some comedians on TV talking about how they said words twice sometimes [and somehow it was cool]. Peple sometimes try to correct me, though >.> I don't listen to them. They also thought it was pronounced Yo-nen Vasquez and not Joe-nen.
