The TiVo caught Food Detectives the other day (a kitchen science show starring Ted Allen that's trying to capture that Alton Brown/Bill Nye the Science Guy vibe) in which they did a segment on brain freeze - that short headache you get from quickly eating or drinking something cold. And I noticed that all the actors who were getting it during the filming* were holding the front of their head, which is odd because I always get it on the side of my head - specifically, the right side. So I wondered ... what about others? IS IT CAN BE POLL TIEM NAO PLZ?

interestingly enough, i don't get brain freezes. i get mouth and throat freezes instead, which usually cause me to start coughing if i eat or drink something cold too quickly. :P

I realized after posting that I should have added more options for people not getting them, and for people with migraines - according to Wikipedia, there have been contradictory studies about whether migraineurs get more or less brain freezes. :D

huh. i didn't know that about people with migraines. fortunately, i also don't get migraines... i can't imagine what it would be like to have to deal with them. D:

You're lucky. They're terrible. Fortunately, I get them rarely now that I've reduced the amount of carbohydrates in my diet and drive less during the day; my migraines are related to hypoglycemia and manifest themselves as light sensitivity.

ugh. :/ good thing you're getting them less often now!

my eyes are sensitive to light, but i don't know what causes that. definitely not migraines.

[identity profile] singsonggirl.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
When I get brain freezes, it hurts at the top of my nose, right between the eyes, in my sinuses. Maybe it just depends on where you're sensitive?

Why no Near love?

+28 Near's fabulous... uh... feet

Everyone's sensitive in the same spot - the blood vessels in the top of the palate. But it's what they call referred pain (http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/314/7091/1364) - the pain itself is felt as being in a different area than the stimulus causing it. So it seems that where it's felt as being located depends on the person (or maybe where on the palate the coldness is, if I'm reading part of the article I linked aright).

The Mello's fabulous ass thing came from this icon. XD

Huh. You learn something new every day!

Also, +29 Near's Bitchin' Dance Moves?

Front. In the area below my right eye, extending all the way to just below my right ear (where the jaw hinge is). The same place where I get pain during sinus headaches. Coincedence? I think not!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. So far, it seems like I'm a freak. :D

(Did you know that they're now saying that most sinus headaches are actually migraines?)

So that means I have little migraines once in a while? With no aura, nausea, or any other of those interesting symptoms?

(My brain freeze seems to occur behind my eyes and nose, so I put "front of my head.")

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, it might be possible. Mind you, they did say "most" and not "all"... XD I'll have to poke around and see where I found that - it was in several places, IIRC.

[identity profile] ebony14.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I did not know that, but when my sinus headaches get bad, I do occasionally have light sensitivity, nausea, and (if I eat certain things) vomiting. That's very rare, though. So, I'm not particularly surprised.

I didn't find the exact citation, but these pages refer to the study in question:

I only get brain freeze from eating ice cream too quickly and it always hit me right smack in the middle of my forehead. Takes forever to go away too.

I'm way over at one end of the bell curve, it looks like...

[identity profile] mothoc.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I happened to have a milkshake in my hand as I read this entry and tried to deliberately induce a brain freeze, since I get them easily..... I couldn't do it. I am annoyed.

I seem to recall getting them in the front of my head, but more like "behind my face" though the area extends from behind my eyes upward into the head proper.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. XD

[identity profile] txtriffidranch.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't get brain freezes in the front because that's where the tumor lives. Sorry.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit, the Greys told me that was an implant!

[identity profile] droiche.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hell, Sanzo always gets my vote, but since the question is about something else I'll give an honest answer that fits the question. =-P

Euhm, I'm too tired to remember exactly where my head usually hurts during brain freeze, but I do know it's always somewhere in the front.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I get more of them on the right side of my head (temple area), but they sometimes occur on the left.

[identity profile] puddingcat.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends what I'm eating. If I'm chewing, it hts on my right temple. If it's a cold drink, it goes to the back of my head.

[identity profile] wyrdness.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't really remember when I last got brain freeze. I always remember them at being top of mouth/ center of the head things that would radiate outwards towards my temples. My body never does things normally though :)

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Like you, I get it on the right side and, like [livejournal.com profile] puddingcat, it depends on whether it's a cold food or drink. If it's food, I get it on my temple or the top of my head, or even my right sinus area. If it's a drink, it's the back of my head.

[identity profile] darksumomo.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the premiere of the show. My opinion of the segments involving the assistants is that they are recreated. Even so, it's good science and great fun.
