If there's anyone local who's looking for a tech-type job, the library just posted two positions for overnights starting this fall. $16.80/hour, 40 hours/week, one year-round, one a 10-month appointment. Go here and choose "library" in the department drop-down menu.

... that's literally almost twice as much as I make now. I like my job, but will not miss the college's stupid pay scale when I graduate.

Heh. That's one of the reasons I'm not in museums right now: the entry-level pay for a person with a Masters' degree is right around $8/hour.

I'm betting the hours are why the pay is fairly high - the shifts aren't the most desirable, as they're overnight. OTOH, the job is bound to be endless stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of either sheer terror or hilarity as weird stuff happens.

Pay for entry-level museum positions suck that bad? Bc I was vaguely considering looking at museum jobs, but not if they pay like that everywhere.

I will not do customer service. I am not suited to it and hate it - though I like reading library_mofo. I'm probably going to spend a couple years as a cog in some office machine, being all organized and details-oriented about stuff I don't care about.

That was a decade ago, and I don't know how they've changed since then, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were still the same. One of the perennial topics of conversation on the museum listserv I used to belong to was about the rate of pay for beginners, and it was divided between those who thought it was a shame and those who thought you should research the field before you got into it and not get into it if you couldn't afford it (i.e. the flaming elitists, IMHO).

Customer service and I do not mix. XD I can do it when I'm selling stuff that directly benefits me at conventions, but I can't do it for a paycheck.

Well, I'd rather have a job I enjoy for two years than make a really good entry-level wage and be miserable from 9 to 5. We'll see ...
