Random things

via [livejournal.com profile] chomiji: Death Note stuff at Hot Topic.

Took a short vacation from the intartubes last night - realized as I was starting to get into an internet argument that it was a pretty good sign I needed to get the hell offline. And then deleted all responses unread this morning from my inbox, because I'd just get embroiled in it again if I read them.

Have now become interested in modern piracy. Alas, the library does not appear to have any works other than government documents on modern piracy, instead choosing to focus on historic piracy. Either that or I have been unable to come up with the correct keywords to winkle it out.

The last thing I really need to do is go by the bookstore at lunch, but I may not be able to stop myself.

Dangerous Waters

I found Dangerous Waters: Modern Piracy and Terror on the High Seas (http://www.amazon.com/Dangerous-Waters-Modern-Piracy-Terror/dp/0452284139/), by John Burnett very interesting, although it was written before the Indonesian Tsunami a few years ago, and thus doesn't discuss the sharp drop-off in Malacca Strait piracy following that, or the recent patrols by Singapore and neighbors.

Strategy Page (http://www.strategypage.com/) sometimes has articles about pirates, mostly Somalia or Nigeria.

I'd be interested in hearing about other books you turn up.

I'd run across mention of the Burnett book in the Discovery Channel show I came across, which spurred the interest. XD As it was also made before the tsunami (I think), it didn't mention the drop-off or patrols, which is interesting.

Thanks! :D

You would probably be able to search better than me, but there has to be something out there. I found this link for CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/africa/04/16/pirate.attacks.ap/

When I searched Google using the phrase "pirates nigeria somalia" I got a ton of hits. You were looking for a book on it? There has to be an article or two out there in some academic journal that could possibly satiate your thirst for now...*hopes*

Cool, thanks! I went by the bookstore at lunch and got the book recommended upthread, but it was published in 2002 so doesn't have recent info in it. Hopefully I can track down articles! XD

I'm so corrupted by the interwebs...LOL. You said Modern Piracy and I was like "What, music?" Gods I'm a nerd. Wasn't there just a french boat taken hostage by a bunch of Somalians? Hm..

Also- I don't blame you for vacationing from the internet. Some people are just stupid.

Yeah, if you're not in a aid ship going to Somalia (where it's assumed you take on the risk), then you don't want to be anywhere NEAR Somalia. The documentary, made in 2005 I think, on the Discovery Channel that spurred this interest in me said that at the time international shipping advisories said to stay at least 200 miles away from the Somali coast.
