Note to people with LibraryThing accounts:

It's totally awesome that you're putting Project Blue Rose and Spindrift in LibraryThing. But when you do, would you please PUT MY NAME IN THERE TOO? There's an "Other authors" field right there with options to choose from for role. (Which are limited: I don't really like just "Illustrator" because that's too limiting, but "Author" isn't right, either. So I have to live with Illustrator, I think, because it's more accurate than Author.

And I can't figure out if there's a way for me to upload an image of the cover or not. Whine. Found it.

Done, though I don't think that information propagates through all copies, just my own record.

Thanks. I'd just like to be able to search on my name and have it produce the things I've done.

Mm...I don't know that the Other Authors field allows that. I don't think it's indexed the same way or something. Searching on your name in the Author field brings no results. Searching on your name in the Works field brings up a record that was apparently entered incorrectly (http://www.librarything.com/author/folsestephaniegandbr).

I just checked and there seems to be a thread (http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.php?topic=33678#580293) about this, or something similar, in the 'Recommended Site Improvements' group.

Eh, figures. But at least if the record is called up, it ought to be there. When the anthology's printed, that's going to be interesting, seeing as we have five authors in it.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of my anthologies are listed by editor. I've never gotten around to fixing the listings because I kind of have a lot of books and as much as I like LT, that's a lot of time.

We have three editors. :)

Looking at the Sharon Lee and Steve Miller books (http://www.librarything.com/combine.php?author=leesharon), it seems their books are all entered in twice, once with Miller as the author and once with Lee as the author. Which is really complicated, and I can't imagine why whoever came up with the database never considered books with more than one author.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect it's not that they didn't consider it, but that they couldn't figure out how to accommodate it. It took a while for them to bring on a real programmer to work on the back end and he's got a pile of thorny issues to work out, one by one.

This is probably why they've always said that the site will never come out of Beta. ;-)

I wrote a database for a PHP class that, among other things, accommodated more than one author, so I have little sympathy. :P

(Author table. Book table. Table that lists Book ID with Author ID. The display page searches that table for all records that match Book ID, then posts them to its page.)

The only databases I've ever been able to handle are in Access. I've got no idea how their backend works, though I think they're generally open to talking with people who have questions about it. There may be more details than the single thread I found in Talk, though.

Or perhaps [livejournal.com profile] telophase and [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija have combined to become Ultra Mechawriterillustratorzor! Now they can rampage through downtown LibraryThing, unstoppable by anything (except maybe a giant Cyber Knight Librarian, which was exposed to an electrical surge and sucked in to a computer database)...

ENTIRELY POSSIBLE!

You never know. I can see the anime now... and it's indescribable.
