AH GOD SOMETHING NOT RENJI OR RUKIA!!!

Relaxing by doing something that is TOTALLY NOT a doujinshi or fanart in any way, shape, or form.

There will eventually be a drummer as well, but he's still sketchy. :D

This style of painting seems to be working well: I start with a dark background, and build up with lighter shades. There will eventually be colors, applied as tints on top of the shading. Eventually.

Am hoping to start to be able to sell prints on DA, and to send them to SF cons that are not anime-oriented, so am looking at non-fanart things right now. :D

ETA: There is actually a light gradient from the front of the floor to the back, but the jpg compression totally ate it. Phooey.

ETA2: A test saving it as a PNG graphic preserved some of the gradient details.

Oh, very nice! I like the muscles in his back.

That's the best part about oil painting and techniques from oil painting: you just slop stuff on in approximately the right position, and if you've got the direction of the light right, the viewer's mind supplies the detail to make it look like the thing it's supposed to look like.

I'll start refining him next, after I fix a couple of shading issues on the drum stand which aren't apparent in this jpg version thanks to the compression darkening it up a bit. :D

Based on what I've seen recently, people love dragons, fairies, and steampunk. Fairies riding steampunk dragons should be smash hits.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
And cats. With wings. You cannot forget the wings. *shudder*

If I could just bring myself to throw wings on some of my figure drawing, they'd make great fairies. It's that I just can't stand to do it. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
What about Gothy metal steampunk wings, like in CLAMP's Clover?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
See, that involves two things I totally suck ass at: drawing wings, and drawing detail.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think you should practice drawing wings! It will be a fascinating social experiment to see if your bad practice wings sell.

PS. Are you going to bring a printer to A-Kon, so you can print fewer prints up-front, but more during the con if certain ones sell out?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
The other problem is that I really hate pictures with wings on things. It's very hard to do a good picture when it involves stuff you hate. Can you write a story featuring a theme you really despise and do it justice, even though readers may love, say hot smexy vampire werewolves with invisible magic cock rings?

PS I'm leaning away from that, actually, because it's been a hassle every time I've done it so far.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I am teasing you. ;)

What popular elements do you like to see and/or like to draw?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have had too many people attempt to tell me to do that in all seriousness. It's a bit of a trigger for me.

I can't really spak for *popular* stuff, but stuff I know I like doing, or want to do, is: Asian themes and objects. Pictures of people. I've got enough foxes living in my head right now that I could probably whip some out if I tried. I feel it's horribly cliche, because it seems every fanartist does one of some character at some point, but I'd really kind of like to do a picture of someone with one of those masks on the side of their head or holding one, kind of like this (http://jiuge.deviantart.com/art/gin-71062900). (PS LOOK THROUGH HER GALLERY!) I'd like to do something with elaborate, detailed clothing but I have a hard time designing it. I really OUGHT to be able to do something like this (http://plue.deviantart.com/art/mangetsu-no-hime-36381493), where you have random portrait of vaguely fairytale or mythological character.

ETA: Any ideas you might have, throw 'em this way. :) I'm going to bed right now so I'm not a *total* zombie tomorrow at work.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh WOW, there's some amazing stuff there! Though I note that the Arrancar holes are not really hole-like. Maybe that's just as well.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm tempted to buy her Byakuya poster and I don't even LIKE him!

ETA: She's the perfect example of why you don't need to get everything perfect - I can spot flaws in anatomy and perspective in almost everything, but the overall effect is so good that they're not important.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to design clothing-- you could just steal it from photos of stuff in museums or antique galleries.

A kitsune statue in the mysterious shrine or Fushimi Inari, halfway through transforming into a real fox and stepping off its pedestal, part gray stone, part living fur.

The spirits of the seasons: women or men in appropriate Japanese attire lurking fairy-tale-like amidst the cherry blossoms, snowy garden, autumn foliage, and summer flowers.

Monks doing Zen archery in a Japanese garden.

A child creeping up on a whomping big Japanese dragonfly (which has wings, sorry!)

A cat curled round the base of a statue of the Buddha.

A hopping vampire counting rice grains.

A monk or miko exorcising a spirit.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason, stealing directly from historical stuff doesn't fit what I want to do in my head. Yeah, I'm weird that way. :D

But keep the ideas coming! THe more the merrier! Thanks!

It's coming to me that I had a kitsune RPG character once ... unfortunately, the online game she was in folded before it got very far. But there was a charming little scene at the start where she was cooking dinner along the road, and another traveller (another player character) smelled the food and came to ask to share the fire.

(I'm trying to find you picture references but my Google-fu is a real loser today ... .)

hot smexy vampire werewolves with invisible magic cock rings?

You had me at "cock rings" *snerk*

I bet someone has probably written something along those lines, which is a very odd notion.

BEHOLD! the Magical Cock Rings Author (http://www.annebishop.com/). The ones in question are the Magical Cock Rings, er, the Black Jewels Trilogy, and The Invisible Ring. I haven't read any others, so I have no idea if they feature magical cock rings or not. You can read Rachel's review of the first book in the trilogy here (http://rachelmanija.livejournal.com/tag/author:+bishop+anne).

Winged Chihuahua. Can't forget that.

Oooo nice.

I am now thinking about a taiko performance I once saw with a really ripped and wiry guy beating a giant drum dressed in only sumo underwear...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
See, this was the problem with the Chinese drummers, as opposed to the Japanese drummers I've seen: the decided lack of mostly-naked men. I think their performance could only have been enhanced by that.

[personal profile] oyceter 2008-03-24 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I think that is a serious flaw. I speak, of course, solely for intellectually interested artists in the audience.

Hi Oyce! Have some ripped guys playing taiko!

This one is just like the guy I saw! Only he might have been even skinner and wirier, if that's possible.

Also, I was close to the front and had a very nice view of all his muscles working.
