I know this is probably a dumb question, but I do in fact live under a very large rock, so what is fandom_wank, and why does it have that name? I vaguely fear just poking around, as the last time I did that with something I'd heard of online I wound up reading other people's flame wars from 1997 and it was really, really scary. This is why I tend to sort of quietly post fic and fade into the ether...
It's an LJ-type community over on Journalfen that's pretty much dedicated to finding stuff publicly posted in online fandoms where people are taking themselves way too seriously, i.e., wanky, and pointing and laughing at them. It's known for snark and wank itself, and has a fairly tight-knit community of regulars who compete to say funny things and snark and whatnot. You can find it at http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank.
It may or may not be your cup of tea, but I'm there for the funny - I usually don't even go look at the sites being linked to, because the comment threads on FW are funnier.
It's the usual thing, which happens on every community where someone links. He posts a lik to my throwaway comment, put his interpretation on it, and then everyone starts making their *own* interpretation of it, and as in the game of Telephone, it mutates along because people aren't going to check out the source material, and then you end up with people complaining loudly about soemthign I enver said.
The bits where I'm supposed to hold f_w up to the same standard as fanthropology are completely out of left field, though, and I think that whoever's saying that (I've lost track of whos' saying what at the moment) is scrambling to keep some sort of logical face here, because ... there's zero connection. Same as with claiming I'm generalizing when I say there's a bias towards online fandom while at the same time defending that bias towards online fandom. Pick one or the other choice to defend, dudes!
There is a real issue of people==community in LJ I've noticed. I had a similar experience of seeing a community labeled as a hotbed of fanfighting - which it wasn't (in fact, the few white-hot wanks there got turned into jokes), but the whole community was easily labeled. I think it's a linguistic thing.
And yeah, F_W is not fanthropology nor vice versa. One of my friends that encouraged me to ressurect it noted that people should find the difference blindingly obvious. F_W is, well, about wank in various shapes, and a good laugh. Fanthropology is about analysis. They're not the same and NEVER going to be the same, which is good since they have different goals.
Plus, when people are seeing only excerpts that are linked to, or when they dip into a discussion and only stay to read a few comments, it's easier to think that the discussion is about nothing but that. I think that's the case with a lot of the people who argue against f_w - they read the reports, and they read the first few comments, which usually deal with the reports, and they miss all the subthreads that devolve into icon compliments, discussion of slashfic, joke-trading, and so forth.
And hopefully the person who's attempting to hold me to the same standards on fanthro and f_w clues in that they're apples and eggplant. :) I'm probably going to avoid fanthro for a few days because I don't wan't to get wanky - I've done a fairly good job of not wanking but this weekend I've got a tight deadline and I know I'm going to be even more stressed and sleepless than usual, so I don't trust myself to judge the line between debating and wanking correctly.
Weirdly, the intial poster actually just mentioned it, it was only later people assumed you spoke for all of F_W.
I think what is missed on F_W, the more I look at it, is that it's really really NOT monolithic. It's a weird mix of reporting, commentary, and socializing. But as usual, people identify communities and individuals the same. Fanthro gets the same treatment as well - hell, most communities do. Some of it is probably linquistic - call it a community, and people assume unity.
I was wondering if you were stressed, you seemed a bit off. I'd take a break period from anything you could.
Yeah - it's one of the many in-jokes on F_W that we're the Hive Vagina, because we're apparently all of one mind, and all female.
I've been very stressed these past couple of weeks due to several things, but it's not entirely due to that - when I flip over into being defensive, I get wanky. I'm more likely to let something go as not worth the investment of time and energy when I'm not short of sleep and people aren't demanding too much fo me offline, but it's not a given that it's due to stress. I can pop off at random times. :)
XD I've always thought the "Electron Transport System" from biology would make a good band name, and "Boys Without Cars" was one a friend and I came up with.
April 28th. That's when my next paycheck hits the bank. ;) I have to keep enough in my account at this point so my car payment doesn't get bounced.
But I may go buy a memory card for the PS2, provided it's not a whole buncha money (I need to go look that up) because I forgot to when I got the system, so I can save my progress in Tricky instead of starting all over from the beginning every time. The character I'm playing still tends to complete most of the course on her face, but she's doing it within the time limits a lot fo the time, now.

Frankly I think people view F_W as this monolithic "thing", which frankly it's not. It's practacally anti-monolighic.
F_W is a phenomena. And it gets treated as such sometimes - as a single thing.
