Duuude...

I just found out that the bistro/snack bar in the library is now not only offering sushi, but offering unagi sushi!* It's a pack with 8 pieces of a California roll and 4 pieces of unagi sushi.

* Eel, for those you don't know. And for those who are creeped out by raw fish, unagi is invariably served cooked.

Yum, unagi.

Good stuff even for those of us who like raw fish. :-)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the best unagi I've eaten, but as far as school food generally goes, not bad. :)

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And for school food, cooked is probably best ...

I've been pondering trying eel sushi. Out of curiosity, what's the texture like on eel?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The texture on this eel is a little on the chewy side, but that's because it's School Food. :) It's like one of the meatier fishes, in general, I think. Something vaguely like tuna or swordfish.

I tried it last weekend for the first time. I found it very rich and oily, not quite to the point of being slimy. Tasty, though.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll add that the times I've had it, it's been drenched in a thick sauce similar to teriyaki sauce.

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The meat itself is a lot like cooked fish, or even softer. The skin can be chewy, again like fish skin.

I like eel sushi, but I prefer to have eel over rice (I think this is called unagi don), where it generally is still warm, whereas on sushi, it is cool or cooling down.

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit hard to describe, because eel is cooked still attached to the skin. So part of it is flaky like a lot of cooked fish, but part of it is chewy and even a bit slick/slimy (not in a gross way once you get used to it), especially because it's drenched in unagi sauce, which as [livejournal.com profile] telophase says is almost but not quite like teriyaki.

It's my favorite sushi!

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Treiftastic!

Seriously, though. I'm not a fan of eel and probably wouldn't eat it even if it were kosher. ;-)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not my favoritest fish, but it's not bad. :) I usually stick to the California rolls here, even though I prefer raw-fish sushi to rolls, because I have a Thing about buying raw fish in a box that wasn't made in the last ten minutes. :)

[identity profile] bitpig.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL treyf

[identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Unagi!

*drools*

[identity profile] badnoodles.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
God. Last time I did sushi with friends, between the four of us, we ate 6 rolls that primarily consisted of unagi. (Out of 18 total rolls).

Yes, it was quite disgusting, and we nearly had to be rolled out of the restaurant.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't had eel sushi in ages. *hungers*

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In an Avatar episode, there is a creature called an unagi. I was pleased to get the reference, but not so sure it was apt.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember that one. I was, like, "Wow, that's a big eel!"

[identity profile] cerusee.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the monkey doesn't actually resemble a peach, either.

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2008-02-20 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
lol! True, I guess I don't really recognize that word because in the anime/manga I watch, it doesn't show up that much.

Did you know that Momo and Appa (and the Gravemind in Halo) all have the same voice actor? That surprised me, and made me laugh and laugh.

GLAAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHH

Unagi is MY FAVORITE desu.

Mmmm ... unagi sushi! Eel/cucumber maki are even better!

(However, whenever I hear "eel," lately I keep hearing Gojyo's internal commentary from emungere's Saiyuki fic "Home from the Sea, Home from the Hill": "Eels always look to him like something Sanzo should use his sutra on.")

[identity profile] fuchsoid.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, eeel... I've not tried it as sushi, but smoked eel is terrific. Very rich, though.

But if you're ever in London, avoid jellied eel like the plague; it's very traditional, but completely disgusting. That's pale, bony lumps of eel cooked in a clear greenish aspic with flecks of something green. Nasty.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, that sounds ... special.

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love unagi!
