BLACKBERRY BROWN!
BLUES-HARP BABYSPLIT!!

DEATH NOTE, I LOVE YOU! YOU FREAKY LITTLE FRANCHISE, YOU!!

Have finished Another Note while in the tub, and there was a twist I didn't foresee, but which was actually foreshadowed at least once when I look back at the story (I'll have to reread and look harder), and a bit at the end when I howled with laughter, but I cannot relate it here without giving away a bit of the plot, and That would be Bad.

So: it lives up to the crack that is Death Note, IMHO, although without quite the same sort of twisty tension that the Light/L cat-and-mouse game provided.

P.S. This the same sort of mild spoilery thing under the cut in the previous entry: The scruffy, sugar-loving detective that shows up calling himself "Ryuzaki" to help Naomi on her case XD mentions that he is an "aggressive top" at one point. Is this a shout-out to the fans? XD (or, more likely, a reprimand to the fans who always write and draw uke!L, WHICH IS TOTALLY NOT HIS STYLE THANK YOU VERY MUCH)

...Bluesharp BABYSPLIT?!??!!!???!

I think I must read this.

BLUES-HARP BABYSPLIT!!

YOU MUST READ THIS.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
* Also, there is, of course, no particular flavor of LA unless you count the fact that Naomi Misora has to check to make sure that there is not more than one person in LA named "Backyard Bottomslash."

[identity profile] myrabidpetspoon.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO. I need to go pick this up-- despite the fact I have yet to watch/read Death Note. XD

"Dammit, we got the wrong Bottomslash guys."
"Awe fuck."

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Backyard Bottomslash? I thought you said Brickyard!"

How much of Death Note have you been spoilered for? The book is written with the assumption that you know the events of the first story arc and how it ended, and it will spoil you for that if you are not already.

[identity profile] myrabidpetspoon.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a good chance I'll be safe, but I have no idea when the stuff I know about happened. I'll look up scans/the episodes beforehand anyways, just to make sure I know what's going on.
I'm more amused that the thing to push me into finally watching the series is this novel and its horrible names. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's just say there's a major event that happens at the end of the first story arc. If you know exactly what I'm talking about, then you're fine. If you're going "Could it be this...? or this...?" then you don't know it yet. :)

...so not only was the writer using a dictionary to pick out names, it was a dictionary with only the Bs and maybe a couple of pages of the Qs. Of course!

And HA! HA! to the spoiler-text. :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think they ripped a few pages out of the dictionary, then assembled the names by throwing darts at them blindfolded.

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
My theory is that they drop a cat on a keyboard. They must have realized the names they were getting were a tad bit odd so now, after they drop the car, they have MS Word do auto-correct spellcheck.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right on the auto-correct bit. That's the step that the Hunter x Hunter mangaka fails to take after he bashes his head on the keyboard for a while to name his.

Blackberry Brown sounds like a soul singer or something. [now I'm thinking of blueberry waffles o_o;]

Ah~ L!♥♥♥

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's the most normal name in there. XD

[identity profile] kitsunesan.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Another Note"? Why have I not heard of this?! On a related note, I just got back from seeing The Little Movie That Couldn't (But Tried Real Hard)- AKA Change the WorLd. It was charming, in its own special way.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You can go buy it in Japanese, if you want. :) I saw it in a bookstore in Japan this summer and was tempted despite only being able to read four characters in Japanese.*

* the characters for 1, 2, 3, and the half-a-spiral for "no". Well, I can recognize "yama", after taking the Yamanote Line around the city, so five characters. XD

[identity profile] kitsunesan.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My Japanese is crap. =P But I may just pick it up anyway and look at the pretty pictures.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You can let me know if there are any other novels out, or if this is the only one. :D

Provided I actually get my lazy ass to a manga shop. <<.

hmmmm... but...i thought the guy who showed up calling himself ryuuzaki was actually b, not l... so does that still count? XD;

but i do agree with you on the fact that it's totally not his style. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but two things:

1) (the simple don't-read-too-much-into-it theory) at the time, the reader is expected to think it's L, and if it's in there just as fanservice or to screw with the fanpoodles' heads, that's all there is to it.

2) (the complex canon Nazi theory) B is working very, very hard to copy L in all ways.

[identity profile] celestriad.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
1) haha, that would be great. XD

2) have to agree with you there. so i guess it works either way. XD

now i need to re-read this book to see what else there could be in there for the fans. XP
