Apparently a live specimen wasn't photographed until this century, and that photographer was the one to do it. :) There's a segment from Planet Earth on Youtube that has a Tibetan fox hunting a pika, with David Attenborough all "Why does he have a square face?" With no answer, naturally.
Yup. I found the second picture first, and after a "Whoa, weird!" moment, I thought it might be Photoshopped, since the background was retouched so heavily. And then I found the other photo and the Planet Earth segment on Youtube, and ... it wasn't. :D
Ah ha. So I'm not the only person who wonders that every time I see photo of a Tibetan fox. *whew* Such an odd looking animal. It's like its head is too big for its body or something.
I looked at them, and I was ... dude! I can totally understand a lot of the legends now!
..I still can't understand why they needed to say it was foxes throwing roof tiles off the roof when the roof tiles are held on only by their own weight, but hey - I'm sure it was more like when we say "The Devil must be beating his wife!" when it rains while the sun is shining*, in that it's more of an expression, rather than a true belief.
I was reading a book on foxes and encountered the last photo of the Corsac up there, which gave me a "That's not right!" frisson, whereupon I went searching for more photos of the Corsac and then found the Tibetan fox.
The Corsac is unusual in that it's the only fox with round pupils; the rest are slitted, like a cat's, apparently.
A very human-proportioned, human-eyed face on Tibetan fox. The Tibetan brown bear (http://www.miloburcham.com/G_TibetanPlateau/pages/M_TIBB_02_14.htm) also looks like a person in an animal suit.

(And I love this yak (http://www.miloburcham.com/G_TibetanPlateau/pages/M_WIYA_01_18.htm). He looks ... oddly festive.)
