Know what's even better than seeing Kenpachi-chan show up on someone's Gaia profile?

Knowing that the person who is proudly displaying him doesn't see him, because they've got the Renji cover in their cache, so it's everyone else who sees Kenpachi-chan. XD

I've also got a few hits from somewhere else on Gaia (http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php), but that's a URL which won't show me where it's *really* coming from, since the actual page displayed is taken from a session variable. (That won't mean much to a lot of you: just understand that you can't get there from here. XD) So I have no idea if it's due to someone posting the zanpakuto meme, or someone attempting to hotlink.

And in other random news: had a bizarre dream last night that started with me and [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija on vacation somewhere in the Old West, searching for a book on how to play mahjong, and then eating somewhere that didn't have anything to drink. I started explaining to [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija that I watched Make Me a Supermodel because the challenges were so silly, although I hated the bit where they take their measurements on camera,* and then it completely changed so that I was a cameraman on Make Me a Supermodel - I had no character, I was just filming the whole thing - where several of the supermodel wannabes who had been skateboarding in the house had ruined the hardwood floor with the skateboards and had to replace the floor themselves.

And then three of them decided to move out. In my role as cameraman I followed them to this huge apartment complex that used to be a U.S. Army base - the barracks were all converted to apartments - and watched these supermodel wannabes turf a bunch of homeless people and squatters from the apartment at, like, five in the morning, and then start cleaning out the apartment. In a rare show of individuality, my cameraman-self felt vaguely guilty about this, but as my job was to film and do nothing else, I didn't say anything. And then the part of my brain that constructs houses and apartments in my sleep (I really must be a frustrated architect, because this happens all the time) took over and once the bathroom was cleaned out, it turned out to be heavily ornate in the Art Nouveau style, with green-tinted tub in an odd shape (it was in a sort of chair shape and you sat in it and washed off with a hand-held shower head) and the other appliances were all ornate and gold-tinted. And there were huge picture windows that overlooked the rest of the Army base.

And then I started wondering what the hell an ornate bathroom was doing in a former Army barracks and woke up to realize I'd overslept the alarm by half an hour so I'm working from home today.

I honestly don't know about my subconscious brain sometimes.

* Which is true.

I dreamed last night that the broccoli I had for dinner climed back out of my throat and threatened to dig out my eyes with a spork. So sounds like weird dreams were the rule for last night.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seriously. I dreamt about being turned into a dragon because it would be less emotionally traumatizing to fight that way. I blame my recent not-Gundam Wing fiction-writing activities.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, ew. I hate broccoli anyway, and I wouldn't put anything past it.

One of my standard nightmares is parasites - botflies, weird worm-things under my skin and the like. To the point where I'm currently reading a book about the possible evolutionary benefits of various diseases and conditions, and I usually read it right before bed, but I haven't touched it in a week because the next chapter starts off with Guinea worms and NO WAY IN HELL am I putting them into my brain right before I fall asleep.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Well, it makes sense. Unlike, say, skateboarding supermodels doing home improvement.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You live to foist Ken-chan off on people, don't you?

And your subconscious brain doesn't seem any more odd than mine.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You live to foist Ken-chan off on people, don't you?

Hell, yes!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i could completely see the first part really happening.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, that's a story!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot to mention it was the Old West in the nineteenth century. And the poeple sitting next to us got a big thing of ice tea, and it was explained that we didn't get any because we had failed to order it in advance.

I remember actually watching a table with mahjong tiles on it, but I'm not sure who was playing. It was about that point we started searching for the book.

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, you're right! If only I weren't working on a novel and a short story right now. *cries* (Seriously, my brain can only plot so much at once, and I'm only able to do this, I suspect, because I have a fairly clear outline for Paper Knives.)

Session variable

[identity profile] darksumomo.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that when the photo displayed on a web page is different from the last time you logged in because the site loads up a randomly selected image from a bank of images? If so, now I know the term used to describe the website of one of my former employers (http://www.lcc.edu/) which loaded up one of a dozen images every time I visited the site.

(And, yes, it's snowing to beat the band up here, as you can see by the campus closings on the web page.)

Re: Session variable

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No - what's usually going on with random photos is that every time you reload the page, a script (usually Javascript) on it picks a random number, and then displays the photo associated with that number.

A session is when information is stored (usually in a cookie) that allows the scripts on the pages you load to access that information. Usually, when you pass info in a URL like page.php?pageID=3, the "3" is passed over and is good for only the next page, then vanishes. Unless you store it somewhere in the page, in a hidden field.*

However, if you open a session, which is active only for your browser and only for a limited amount of time, you can store the page ID number until the session ends, so all scripts can access it. It doesn't end up in the URL, so when someone visits my site (or loads a page that has a picture hotlinked from it), it doesn't leave the pageID (or whatever variable identifying the page it's *really* going to, most likely a forum page) in the URL. So I have no way of telling what page they came from.

I probably explained that Not Quite Correctly, but it's hard to explain what it is and what it does when I conceptualize it as a box that you shove information into which any page can access. XD Oh - Login credentials are basically session variables. You get a cookie on your machine that says "this person is loggged in as [livejournal.com profile] darksumomo" and all Livejournal pages you go to can access it. So your friendspage can see that you're logged in and shows you f-locked posts from your friends, etc. And when you log out, the cookie is destroyed, along with the session.

* It can also be sent over in a hidden variable, which might be what the Gaia page I refer to does, but I doubt it, since complicated sites tend to go for session variables instead.

Pfft! If you find anyone on Gaia using that link in their signature in its original state - honestly, you could ping me about it because I believe the original oversized for Gaia's signature restrictions, and I could/should disable it for that. :P

Though your way is funnier, I must admit. *post-stalks the person idly to see if anyone is going 'wtf' at the sig*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've just signed up on Gaia to allow for greater ease of stalking people who hotlink from me. XD I am, naturally, "mellohatesyou".

ETA: And he's certainly using it on his journal: http://www.gaiaonline.com/journal/?u=10473571

I have a desire to change it to an animated .gif now that says things like "I'm a dumbass and can't see that this isn't displaying on the page because the picture I'm attempting to hotlink is in my cache. It's a real nice picture, though," alternating with Kepnpachi-chan. Only, y'know, pithier.

ETA2: Oh, he is using it as a sig (http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/tv-anime/itachi-or-sauske/t.36452555_19/#19), along with another picture. I shall have to follow him and see if anyone notices. XD Now I really do feel like changing it to an animated gif that sends out little messages.

If you post stalk me, you'll only find my crazy RPs and my delicious OCs. Hehe.

Lemme know if you want some items or a tour or something. And for the love of god don't go in General or Extended Discussion. Just don't.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
OK, cool. Perhaps when I get bored at work and need to procrastinate. XD

How bad are General and Extended Discussion compared to the DA forums? (Although I know when Gaia wanks come through fandom_wank, it's funny to see everyone's cute little smiley chibis spewing venom at each other. XD)

Primarily, uh, Breedable/Changing Pets. *cough* >>; Because they have the best damn RP on the site in there, believe it or not.

I love the ongoing saga of your hotlink zing! (I hope it's not frustrating the hell out of you and you don't want to hear my *squee*. I suspect by the evolution of the image that you're having fun with it, too.)

i already knew about the kempachi thing before i used

Time traveller, are you then? Cause I didn't actually make Kenpachi-chan until after I found you (and others) hotlinking Renji.

thx for pic

You're welcome. In all seriousness. They're up there for people to use. If I cared about people taking the picture, I wouldn't have put them on the internet. The bandwidth, however, is not yours. Photobucket exists for this sort of thing.

loser

Gosh, you sure told me. I have been thoroughly pwned. I'm shaking in my shoes. I shall crawl off the internets in tears.

(BTW, you might want to know that one of the people who reads this is a Gaia mod. In case you're still using an outsize sig.)

thats great im a suppose to be scared of a gaia mod and only reason i put loser and shit because i dont like to be stalked so have i nice life

Re: yeeaa hey stalker

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-05 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you know, if you don't want them knowing you're breaking Gaia rules. Because they do have the ability to do stuff to people breaking their rules.

only reason i put loser and shit because i dont like to be stalked

So ... exactly how is that supposed to do anything? Other than amuse me? *You* are the one hotlinking *my* bandwidth that I pay actual money for, and you're miffed because I take steps to take care of that? That's like a bike thief complaining because someone put a chain on the bike. Keep on talking, because this is just getting funnier.

Your use of my bandwidth puts the URLs you're hotlinking on right in my site statistics, right there for me to see. If you don't want people knowing what you're doing, not hotlinking is the way to do it. If you're going to hotlink, you gotta accept the consequences: that people can see exactly what you're doing.

Is it really necessary to

a) go to someone's journal to bitch about them calling you out on hotlinking

b) refuse to learn what hotlinking is (or just playing dumb, either way, fail)?

No, no it's not.

Also, there's this great thing called "spellcheck." You should look into it.

Netiquette 101 for l33t d00dz

[personal profile] chomiji 2008-04-05 03:09 am (UTC)(link)

Sweetie, I see you need a little schooling about some basic Intarwebs terminology and netiquette.

Hotlinking = the act of including someone else's stuff on your page when it's still actually on their site.

Like: let's say you have your darkrenji homepage at a www host named www.lamed00dz.com. So your page is, let's say,

http://www.lamed00dz.com/darkrenji/index.html

And let's say telophase-san has an awesome picture you want to include on her site at

http://www.magatsu.net/pic/nopic.jpg

If you put that picture on your page, then every time someone looks at your page, it also generates a hit on her site. Which means you are using her resources - which she pays for - for your site.

That's called hotlinking.

Basic netiquette says: don't hotlink! Save that picture (by right-clicking with your mouse on the picture, and choosing "Save picture as... " - or if you have a Mac, you can just drag it into a folder) on your own system, then upload it either someplace free (like photobucket) or someplace that you pay for.

So say you saved that pic (which telophase-san would have been perfectly happy for you to do because she is a generous person as well as a great artist) and put it on your photobucket account. It's now at (made up info again)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/darkrenji/nopic.jpg

Now you can put that copy of the picture on your page, and you're not hotlinking to someone else's stuff.

And if you really want to prove that you're a really fine netizen and not a bloodsucking parasite, you can also credit the artists whose work you're using to make your site look great - "Awesome Renji art at the top of my page by telophase" - or some other polite thing.

Just a thought. Because she'd do it for you, if you'd produced anything she wanted to use.

Re: Netiquette 101 for l33t d00dz

[personal profile] chomiji 2008-04-05 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)

Well, let's get real here a second, darkrenji-kun. lady_ganesh-san is pissed because you were rude to our friend telophase-san. You were stealing our friend's resources. She busted your chops good with the kenpachi-chan pic, but she didn't do you any real harm. And then you show up here on telophase-san's own LJ and accuse her of stalking you and call her a loser. And it's extra obnoxious that you called her a loser when she's a good enough artist that you wanted to put her art on your page.

So sorry, little dude - you were snotty and out of line. So you got people mad. Deal with it. You're smarter now than you were before, and maybe next time someone catches you doing something ignorant that messes with their stuff, you'll say "sorry, won't do it again" instead of acting like an asshat.

Sometimes you win - and sometimes you learn.

but i did say sorry did u not read my last reply to her or not because i no i was out of line and shouldn't have stole her stuff yea i get that thats old now but people coming out of nowhere after i said "sorry" and "trying" to trash me is kinda out of contact
