Hrm. Today's the sort of day I'd love to waste spend in neepery of one sort or another on LJ, but I can't actually think of any topics that would generate lots of talk and debate. Or at least the sort of talk and debate I'd want to actually participate in - art, writing, dissecting manga characters/plots/whatever.

and the usual "Entertain me!" demand doesn't work right now, because when that happens, people post links and GAH! NO! HUMAN INTERACTION! (or a reasonable facsimile thereof.)

I have to give a presentation on social networking on Thursday, since the one I was supposed to give earlier got cut to about 30 seconds since SOMEONE ELSE ran over their presentation time by about 150%, and need to actually start writing that. :P (this is not a request for advice or info on that, as I already have all I need - it's a short presentation. It's just a whine.)

So what favorite book do you think you'll want to re-read next? I'm about 80% of the way through a re-read of DWJ's The Homeward Bounders, ostensibly because I might write a bit of fic about it.

Dunno, really. I'm on a massive search for something new, that I can't describe in any way other than "the kind of book I want to read." And I haven't found it.

I recently reread Monstrous Regiment for the umpteenth time, and I can't say why it presses my buttons. But I started rereading during that Massive Migraine from Hell, because I can't pick up anything new when feeling sick, or if I go to reread it later, I'll start feeling sick again. :)

Heh, taste aversion with books! My friend Kat's husband will tell you quite seriously that hot dogs cause appendicitis ... .

I was thinking meganbmoore might like Monstrous Regiment (you probably saw her call for fantasy to read, yesterday). I had my sister read it as her intro to Pratchett recently - now I'm wondering what to give her next. I like Monstrous Regiment as well. It seems to manage to push the "women can do anything" angle without degenerating into pure "men are idiots" - even though it shows plenty of them that are idiots. I think it may be partially because the antics of the regiment are indeed presented as antics - yet sympathetically, so we're laughing with them as well as at them.

I've just found out I have to train a new user from the investor education group on the content management system - they are the only group that manages their own content on the site. There goes the latter part of my afternoon ... .

I'd say whatever the earliest Night Watch book is, if she liked MR. It's got the same cynical flavor to it.

One of the things that I really like in MR is that the commanding officer, who starts off as the stereotypical naive officer one-note joke, does become more than that, even while he keeps his naivete.

(We could talk SDK! I think the Sanada 10 wandered in from some other manga - do they strike you that way? esp. Jinpachi, with that mechnical arm .... you should see the rest of them! The link goes to a pic from vol. 36 of the manga ... very mild spoiler because it's not possible to figure out why they're doing what they're doing. And if you do look, that's not Yukimura next to Jinpachi, in the middle.)

I've just finished rereading every Pratchett book I like (Everything except the stuff with Rincewind.) and I'm contemplating starting in on the stuff I didn't like so much just because I'm in the mood for his comfortable, narrative style.

Pratchett audiobooks are awesome, especially the ones read by Stephen Briggs. XD His prose lends itself well to the spoken word, and when you've got someone throwing accents in there, the characters come even more alive.

I listened to THUD! on audio and every time the narrator read "WHERE'S MAH COW" I cracked up!

Damn...I could use some distraction too. Unfortunately, I'm not having any better luck coming up with discussion topics.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
:/

And it's never the topics you carefully craft to get results; it's the ones you toss off in half a second that explode.

Which is why I am resorting to memery. ;-)

I am getting leery of posting memes that involve results you I cut-and-paste into the my blog, because everyone and their dog does it, then cuts-and-pastes the results into my comments. Which would be fine, except that the LJ notifications in my inbox then become full of unreadable HTML tags, which irritates the hell out of me.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
No, this is one of the 'identify this song/show/movie' ilk. Nothing cut and paste except from notepad where I'm making my list.

It was either this or resurrecting the 'Userpic War' one because I haven't seen that go round in approximately forever. ;-)

I have occasionally thought of posting "DANCE PARTY!!" with the Aizen/Gin icon and seeing what showed up, but that wouldn't involve the sort of thinking and typing I want to do today. XD

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed :)

Sadly, I still have no dancing icon to use in response, either.

Polls get lots of response!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-01-29 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
1. General: Run a poll in which you name books, manga, anime, etc, that you've never seen/read, etc, and ask people to vote for which you should see and say why. Guaranteed to get lots of responses!

2. Manga conversation: A poll on... most cracktastic manga, most bad-ass manga character (male, female, and hard to say), best plotting, and/or most beautiful art. Ask people to defend their choices in comments.

You'd be surprised at how often polls don't receive lots of response. XD

I'm thinking that what I really want more of is analysis, and analysis I can participate in, rather than prompting responses about stuff that I haven't read. Probably because That Thing Wot I Am Not Writing is trying to stir in my head again, and I'm trying to work stuff out about it. Something like that Giant Gin Post of a while back.

Hrm.

(And I've got an incipient migraine. I'll probably ditch work soonish.)
