The ethics of placebo.

Who was it I was discussing placebos with earlier? At any rate the blog Science-based Medicine has an article today on the Ethics of Deception (including placebo).

I'm just now pricing out the Computers in Libraries trip, and OMG the hotel it's at is $209/night, for a total of almost $1K for Sunday through Wednesday nights.

Would you be (a) interested in rooming (b) at another hotel (I'm going to start looking for one that's cheaper) either (c) within walking distance or (d) would your library go in on a car rental if there isn't one within walking distance and the total of hotel & car is cheaper than the Crystal City Hyatt?

ETA: Or other hotel & taxi/other transportation money, come to think of it. XD It seems to be near the airport, unlike the Internet Librarian one, where it was cheaper for me to fly into a different city and rent a car instead of flying directly to the city and staying in the conference hotel, which is why I thought of rental first off instead of taxi or bus.

ETA2: Sheesh! Even the frickin' Holiday Inn is $247/night! Finding something elsewhere for $79/night and renting a car sounds better and better ALL THE TIME.

ETA3: Orm as this is Washington DC, the chances of that are getting slimmer. XD But sharing a room at the conference, including the $25/night extra-person fee, brings it to $510 and change/each for Sunday night through Wednesday night (I'm asking to go to a workshop or two on Thursday).

Does your school not cover hotel? *is shocked*

Let me talk to my coworker--we usually room together at these things, but I think she'd be okay if we didn't. My job will pay half, and I think DC is one of the special "high price" places, but they hate it if you don't stay at the conference hotel. I won't be able to talk to her until tomorrow, but I'll check and see our options.

My school covers hotel, but I don't think I'd get approved for $1000 worth of hotel, especially as I want to take two workshops. :)

What my school doesn't cover, actually, is food. I get no per-diem.

LOL. Well, ours is all determined by locale (up to X per night depending on place) and then overall budget. It's pretty generous, but I usually make wiggle room by taking extra conference passes that the school bought 'in case', because those don't come out of my budget. Mine covers food, but they're very cheap about it. It's not usually a big deal, but San Francisco nearly did me in. Of course, that could also be partly the copic shopping spree at Kinukuniya....

I'm not quite sure what-all goes into this, but I think it's more that the individual department has a budget of $X to distribute among its conference-goers. I know the library dean has to approve it, and has the authority to say yes or no to things like a cheaper hotel with a rental car instead of the conference hotel. :D

And I pay for everything and get reimbursed by the school, for the most part. Last time, the departmental admin asst. used the department credit card to get my registration online, but I had to pay for the travel and hotel myself.

ETA; And I'm leaning towards conference hotel, as it'd have to be *way* the hell away in order to get a less expensive hotel. I submitted my proposal as if I were staying at the hotel, with costs for both single room and double.

(And just FYI - that does seem to be the same hotel as last year, and it's really a rather long walk from the Metro station, so if you had to use Metro to travel to and from this putative other hotel, it would be a pain ... .)

Woo, I just got approved to stay at the conference hotel. :D With, preferably, a roommate, but alone if I absolutely have to. XD

I just got approved to stay at the conference hotel, by myself if I absolutely have to, although the dean says she highly encourages me to find a roommate. XD
