They both seem like good, simple history books to use as an overview. Most of the books I've got in the library here are, by nature of the academics, pretty heavy going and I feel the need for a good overview in my head before I get into the heavy details.

And when I was in college and studied abroad a semester and visited York, I made a point of finding Dick Turpin's grave and standing on it. :D (Gah! I just realized he was hanged when he was five years younger than me!)
