The new BPAL update, and musings upon it.

>> ++ GENERAL CATALOGUE: ARS AMATORIA
>> DEEP IN EARTH
>> Rose geranium, Spanish moss, Irish yew, and graveyard dirt.

No. None of these work on me.

>> DEFUTUTA
>> Olive blossom, honey, smoky vanilla, cinnamon, jasmine, sandalwood, and champaca flower.

I'm leery of the honey, which tends to go cloying on me.

>> FASCINUM
>> Golden amber, golden musk, litsea cubeba, cedar, and saffron.

Possibly ... but I'm allergic to cedar.

>> L'ECOLE DES FILLES
>> This is a libertine's celebration of decadence, debauchery, and sexual freedom: orange
>> blossom, ambergris, orris root, white rose, lemon balm, jonquil, carrot seed, and benzoin.

Everything here is a YES but benzoin, and it's so far down on the list, I'm willing to risk it. As it's a GC scent, I can get an imp to test. :)

>> LOVE'S TORMENTS
>> White sandalwood, neroli, and vetiver.

No. Neroli = bitternasty, vetiver = just nasty on me.

>> TO A WOMAN
>> Benzoin, cassis bud, patchouli, rose otto, and petitgrain.

Nope.

>> And, the new Limited Edition scents:And, the new Limited Edition scents:
>> ++ LUNAR NEW YEAR
>> EARTH RAT
>> A new year's blessing! Peony, bamboo, plum blossom, tangerine, lychee, orange, pine resin,
>> golden kumquat and quince, narcissus and King mandarin, coconut, and candied melon, with a
>> splash of blazing red of dragon's blood

There are more YES than NO scents here, so I'll give it a try. The dragon's blood might make it a NO for me, though.

>> PARENTALIA
>> Cypress, rose, violet, frankincense, ambrette, marjoram, and Lebanese cedar.

Uh, no.

>> ++ LUPERCALIA 2008 UPDATE
>> ANACTORIA
>> Golden amber, white honey, red currant, daemonorops, kush, and Arabian musk.

Mmm. Maybe. The honey and musk are worrisome notes.

>> KHAJURAHO 2008
>> honey, date palm, tuberose, davana blossom, amber, white sandalwood, vanilla bean,
>> Damask rose, and champaca flower.

Flowers might be OK, but honey as the major component makes it a NO.

>> LUPERCI 2008
>> raw, down and dirty patchouli, Gurjam balsam, and essence of Sampson Root sweetened
>> with the heightened sexuality of beeswax, virile juniper, oakmoss, ambrette seed over
>> honey and East African musk.

Nope. Will turn to head shop on me from all the patchouli.

>> PARLEMENT OF FOULES 2008
>> White rose and soft resins.

I wish I liked rose more, as the soft resins sound good.

>> RED LANTERN 2008
>> Golden amber, blonde tobacco, Sudanese black coconut, rich caramel, black currant,
>> white opium and delphinium laced with a sensual blend of Asian spice.

I've got Red Lantern 2007, which is OK, but probably enough for me. :)

>> SMUT 2008
>> Three swarthy, smutty musks sweetened with sugar and woozy with dark booze notes.

OH GOD NO.

>> VALENTINE OF ROME
>> Ecclesiastical incense, Roman flora, and the fruits of martyrdom: cypress,
>> olive blossom, frankincense, myrrh, and blood accord.

I'm not sure. The cypress would be a NO usually, but a lot of other notes work on me...

>> ++ LUPERCALIA: LOVE POEMS
>> A FAREWELL TO FALSE LOVE Sir Walter Raleigh
>> Pale lavender, sweet violet, balsam of Peru, and paperwhite narcissus.

Lavender? AUTOMATIC NO.

>> THE CLOD AND THE PEBBLE William Blake
>> Rose otto, clove, patchouli, Indian sandalwood, nutmeg, and cedar.

Head shop. No.

>> THE FLOWER SONG Unknown, Written during Egypt's New Kingdom
>> Pomegranate wine, lotus root, river reeds, hyssop, and barley.

Unsure. Lotus smells like bubble gum to me, but I'm not sure I've tried pomegranate.

>> HER VOICE Oscar Wilde
>> Hyacinth, beeswax, wild roses, vanilla amber, lily of the valley, tiger lily,
>> honeysuckle, carnation, and heliotrope.

Mmm, possibly. Depends how strong of a honey scent the beeswax is.

>> LA VITA NUOVA Dante Alighieri
>> Apple blossom, white rose, lemon balm, and champagne grape.

Oh, I think this is a definite: apple blossom works well on me. :)

>> LONGING Matthew Arnold
>> Rose geranium, frankincense, Ceylon cinnamon, golden musk, bay rum, and bois du rose.

No, too much rose, I think.

>> LOVE'S PHILOSOPHY Percy Bysshe Shelley
>> Vanilla, saffron, and cream.

Nope. Cream/milk scents are icky to me, and vanilla turns to plastic.

>> NIGHT THOUGHTS Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
>> Lilac, blue musk, dianthus, cedar, neroli, ozone, and luminous Eastern herbs.

Hrm. Probably not, the cedar, neroli, and ozone don't work for me.

>> THE PASSIONATE SHEPHERD TO HIS LOVE Christopher Marlowe
>> Heather, clover, Irish moss, English ivy, tea rose, and carnation.

This one's a possibility, although not strong - heather is nice, but I don't think it's OMG YES.

>> THE PRESENCE OF LOVE Samuel Taylor Coleridge
>> White musk, rose-swirled amber, pink grapefruit, and jasmine.

Aaarg, decisions, decision! White musk - not bad. Amber YES, grapefruit not bad, jasmine usually NO. Aaarg!

>> SAPPHICS Algernon Charles Swinburne
>> Tonka, oakmoss, tolu balsam, grey amber, myrrh, and muguet.

Tonka yes, amber YES, myrrh YES. I think it's a definite possibility. :)

>> THE RAGGED WOOD William Butler Yeats
>> Lily of the Valley, star jasmine, benzoin, vanilla, plumeria, bergamot,
>> Terebinth pine, juniper berry, and tea rose.

Too much jasmine and evergreen: I'd be sneezing from one sniff.

>> TO HELEN Edgar Allan Poe
>> Electric ozone, opaline notes, moonflower, white amber, beeswax, and three roses.

Ozone as a primary component is a No, as it smells like dryer sheets to me.

And last, but not least, a temporary wing has been added to the Salon. Novel Ideas For Secret Amusements is a Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Salon Limited Edition series celebrating the joy, humor, playfulness, and thrill of sexual intercourse through scent interpretations of Edo era Japanese erotic art. This exhibit contains explicit depictions of sexual acts and nudity, and viewer discretion is advised..

Yes, even the main page that I linked to there is NSFW, for ... artisticness. XD

On to the Secret Amusements...

>> BUTTERFLIES AND PLOVERS
>> Blood orange, King mandarin, nectarine, patchouli, violet, ylang ylang, and amber.

I'm scared of the patchouli, but other than that, every thing else is good. Hm.

>> THE DREAM OF THE FISHERMAN'S WIFE
>> Seaweed, honey, white mint, and ambergris.

Mint and honey? No.

>> EBISU MAKING LOVE AS TWO OCTOPUSES LOOK ON
>> Oakmoss, skin musk, and nectarine.

Could be a possibility, but at $27.50 for a bottle, I'm hesitant.

>> GLOWING VULVA AT RYOGOKU BRIDGE
>> Cream accord, amber, teak, and lotus blossom.

Let's say I'm quite glad for the cream accord as the first note, because I know I'll hate that even though amber is YES, because I don't want to tell anyone what the name is when they ask me what I'm wearing.

>> HARIKATA
>> Osmanthus, honey, golden musk, vanilla flower, and ginger.

Eh, too much honey, I think.

>> LOVER'S PARODIES OF SUMO HOLDS
>> Tangerine, pikaki, tonka, ti leaf, jasmine, opoponax, and benzoin.

If the benzoin and jasmine aren't too bad ... but that $27.50 price makes me think twice. :)

>> MEN RINGING BELL WITH PENISES
>> Green sandalwood, rice wine, black tea, tonka, and moss.

This one could be nice. Or it could be boring. Argh!

>> THE SPELL OF AMOROUS LOVE
>> Red currant, plum flowers, sake, green tea, and cherry blossom.

I think this one is a YESYESYES.

>> MEN RINGING BELL ... <<

... but it wouldn't bother you to answer the question about what this is called ... ?   XD

I did another BPAL order myself last week, but I'm damned if I can remember all six things I ordered ... "The Lion" was one (per your suggestion), and "Amsterdam," and "Envy," but I don't remember what else!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I would naturally say "Men Ringing Bell" if asked about that one. While I would forget the name of the bridge for the other one. XD

Mmmm, Lion ... smells like savannah! XD

The Spell of Amorous Love sounds really awesome but damn, the price tag makes me cringe.

Whoa. Smut sounds...lovely. So do all the Love Poem scents, especially Night Thoughts.

...I just spent so much money on this update. By which I only mean about $40 in a decant circle, but still. >.> (Part of the problem is that I don't yet know which notes work on me, so anything plant-based that isn't food is very hit or miss even before it gets to my nose and/or skin. We shall see.)

*Glomp* okay dear not only am i now trying to carve a piece of city out of the wilderness. You have to post about the update too. I want some of the Salon just so i can have the bottles and put them in places for my mother in law to find. I am placing my order tonight so i can get the one Yule I want with the extra bottle of red lantern i so need.

Dear you know stalking you is such fun sometimes!

I don't even wear the few imps I already have, but I am going to have to consider getting the 'Earth Rat' because, well, Year of the Rat. I mean, I feel a certain sense of obligation here. (Despite being a water Rat, myself.)

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I want the Butterflies and Plovers. Patchouli does really well on me, blood oranges are my favorite fruit, and amber!! I should probably try Smut, because hey musk + booze notes. I'm surprisingly meh about oak moss and the BPAL cedar amps on me like crazy. The Shelley sounds lovely, but the cream makes me nervous. Some of their milk scents do well on me, but the food (baked goods) go horrid.

Of course, I have more BPAL than any woman needs already. I'm running out of Sin though. I'm sure that says something about me.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I've got way, way more than I need, too. I've even got bottles that don't work on me that I ahven't gotten around to selling. I really ought to do that someday soon.

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've even got bottles that don't work on me that I ahven't gotten around to selling.

Me too. Sigh. One of these days...

(@#$^%& LJ ate my first attempt, trying again)

I still can't believe they have a line of scents for Shoujo Beat, fer crissakes.

Does BPAL have anything currently available that's similar to Bakeneko? Because that is AWESOMESAUCE on me, but that imp you sent me (thankyouthankyouthankyou) is going to run out sooner than later.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
And I bought both of the Shojo Beat scents! XD I don't remember what they did on me, actually - I'll have to dig them out of the drawer I've got all my BPAL in and re-try them.

I haven't run across anything like Bakeneko unfortunately. :/
