Any German speakers here? Can anyone translate "Give me the chocolate and nobody gets hurt!" into the most strident, commanding version of German possible?

[ edit ] Translating "Hand over the chocolate and nobody gets hurt!" also would be nice. It sounsd better in English, but I don't know if it sounds better that way in German, or if there's even a substantive difference.

[ edit 2 ] Poking through the Google Groups archives pulls up a similar post from a group I enver read, discussing the same sig, and has it translated as: "Gib mir Schokolade und niemand wird verletzt !!!!!" So unless someone tells me that's wrong, I shall probably be using it.

(And 'the imperative case' was the phrase I was looking for earlier.)

Ugh, my spoken german isn't that great, not for a sentence like that.

Why not just simply point to the chocolate and then slam a fist in your hand with a glare. :D

It's for an icon. :) The new chapter of Death Note has a chocolate-eating, truly psychotic looking (think Dilandau from Escaflowne) character in it, and I want to make an icon of him.

I remember many moons ago reading a Usenet post that explained that someone's sigfile had that sentence in it, in the most strident language possible, so the effect was of seeing a German officer sighting down the gun barrel of his Panzer tank at you, screaming GIVE ME THE CHOCOLATE AND NOBODY GETS HURT! at the top of his lungs. It seemed appropriate.

Yeah. it's stilted in German, since that's an English sentence construction. but there ya go...

A bit of searching through the Google Groups archives brings up a similar post to the one I remember, from a group I enver read, that has it as:

Is correct, but it doesn't necessarily sound strident and commanding. If one would translate that literally back into English, it would be like, "Give me chocolate and nobody shall be injured."

My suggestions:
"Her/Rüber mit der Schokolade, sonst setzt's was!" (Hand over the chocolate.... or else!)
"Rüber mit der Schokolade, sonst gibt's Verletzte!!" (Hand over the chocolate, or else there'll be injured [as in 'the injured'], but the next suggestion would be more common in speech:)
"Rüber mit der Schokolade, sonst gibt's Tote!!" (Hand over the chocolate, or else there'll be dead)

For the first word you can use either her or rüber (rueber), the actual word is herüber, but nobody would use it that way in that sense.
On the comm I made the suggestion, "Her mit der Schoki sonst knallts!" (Give the choc here else I'll shoot), which is a little bit more casual/rude (or something).

I'm a bit wary of the "...or I'll shoot!" just because Mello, as far as we know, doesn't carry a gun in that FAAAAAAA-bulous coat of his. (but I bet the big guy with dreads does. :)

Guess I should've been a bit more descriptive before, buut ^^; I was in a hurry.

The reason why I suggested the "... or I'll shoot" was, because you asked for the tone of a commanding officer of the army. On a side note, the literal translation of "sonst knallts" would be "or else there'll be a shot", not definitely indicating that the person speaking will shoot (so it could possibly be that Mello's hitman would do the act ;) ).

But seeing it that way I guess the thing with the shooting could be... misleading or so :/

Heh. Yeah, I was a bit unclear - the original sigfile from about a decade ago was explained using the metaphor of an officer looking down the barrel of a Luger at you (I'd misremembered the ordnance there, although a Panzer tank would be much funnier) while screaming - that's the form of speech he'd use.

Not that I know any German one way or the other. XD

I'd take the one with the dead; for one thing it is commonly used, like, "Where's my wallet?! If I don't find it there'll be dead!!" (can also be used in [dark] humour); and ch 60 ended with Mello commenting casually on that poor schmuck's "suicide".

Yah, I just finished reading the full translation of the chapter, and it's ... woo! Division in the ranks! I'll use the dead one, then. Probably with 'her' instead of 'ruber' to save space on teh icon...

To save space you could always use Schoki (or Schoko) instead of Schokolade, it's a cute abbreviation. :)

These are all great, but which you'd use would depend on who is talking to whom. There are definitely situations where "Gib mir die Schokolade, und niemand wird verletzt" would be exactly the right way to put it.

Yes, I did not say it was wrong.

Out of interest: what sort of situations would those be? (I never managed to *learn* another language despite trying two for a couple of years each, but I'ms till fascinated by the ins and outs of languages.)
