Mononoke

If anyone's looking for Mononoke artwork, this post in [livejournal.com profile] mononoke_anime has links and pics.

And for those of you who think I'm talking about Princess Mononoke (I'm not), or who don't know what I'm talking about, YOU ARE MISSING OUT. Go look at the images. THE ANIMATION ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE THAT.

Also, it has a biwa-playing demon fish.

So shiny(in its way.)

Must watch soon.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Very much so. :)

[identity profile] matildarose.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Mononoke needs more love. <3I mean, A BIWA-STRUMMING FISH. SPACE CATS (okay, not really). Deadly Russian roulette-style incense smelling parties! STREAMS OF PUGS WITH SCREAMING BALD MEN FACES.

If I could actually make an icon of that scene with the stream of man-pugs, that would become one of my new icons.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
:D I haven't been able to track down obtainable (without BT, which I can't use) copies of the episodes of ... whatever its name is where the Medicine Seller first showed up. Which DISTRESSES ME GREATLY, I tell you!

It's Ayakashi volume 3 and it's out professionally. Geneon is putting it out, so you'll want to get it before they're gone.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweet, thanks!

Oooo, DeepDiscount.com has it for $14.97 + free shipping. XD

Always happy to help spread the love for the simple medicine seller.

Mononoke only has 12 eps. This makes me sad.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! Well, with luck there might be another series.

We're hoping.

In the meantime, we can watch the episodes again and again and again and again.

[identity profile] madame-manga.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That is indeed very pretty. Reminds me a little of Gankutsuou? Must mention it to the Netflix-monopolizing anime fiend I live with...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's licensed yet. I watched it on crunchyroll.com. :D

[identity profile] arkanefyre.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was going to say that the animation reminded me of Gankutsuou, at least from what I can tell from the caps anyways.

[identity profile] fuchsoid.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I must see this!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it via crunchyroll.com (where it was too small to be able to appreciate the art, really). I wait hopefully for the day it it licensed because I will definitely get the DVDs to be able to glory in the art. :D

[identity profile] fuchsoid.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And now I've gone and bought Ayakashi. I'll be be able to pass it on to my nephew as a Christmas present (feeble excuse).

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no excuse! I need no excuse! XD

[identity profile] keelieinblack.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
*squee* Thank god that Japan has started churning out all sorts of gorgeous fanart for this series. The fact that people have been drawing Mononoke/Okami crossovers makes me even happier.

[identity profile] keelieinblack.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't go hunting for the websites since I'm at work, but here's one pic (http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/7952/000z4962uv0.jpg) to give you an example. :D I'll try to dig up some actual links once I get home.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :D

[identity profile] singsonggirl.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The art for this series is so pretty that it's heartbreaking. want.

[identity profile] yukie1013.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I love, LOVE Kusuri-uri. Love him to BITS. The Nue Story just made me explode into a puff of glittery squee. If Yisou were sane he'd be Medicine Seller. XD

Also, Biwa Fish is voiced by Norio 'I also played Vicious and Xemnas' Wakamoto, which, hee.

Ooo pretty. What's it about?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The guy pictured above is the mysterious Medicine Seller. He exorcises mononoke (evil youkai, basically) through several short stories in the 12-episode series. In order to activate his banishing sword, he has to learn the Form, Truth, and Regret of the mononoke: basically, its true form, its reason for doing what it's doing, and ... er, something I forgot. The art is, of course, stunning, and the youkai are mysterious and twisty. :)

Oh, interesting! Is it sort of like Mushishi? I may put it on the list after I finish Mushishi (though I want a female mushi/youkai/youma/whatever studier/exorcist too!).

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-20 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmmm ..... it's atmospheric, but in a totally different way. I'd say it was closer to horror, only I don't consider it really horror. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! That is unbelievable!

Has this been licensed? Is it based on a manga?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
1) No. crunchyroll.com, if you've got a high-speed connection, streams copies of them. The first story where the Medicine Seller (the guy pictured above) appears, however, is in the third story arc of Ayakashi (http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=19955032), which *is* licensed and available, but is by Geneon, so if you want it you need to get it ASAP. ETA: The first two story arcs (and DVDs) are self-contained, from what I understand, so you only need to get vol. 3. It is apparently revealed in Ayakashi that the Medicine Seller keeps shunga pictures in his medicine chest. XD

See why I kept emailing you "Biwa-strumming demon fish!" earlier??? :)

2) No. :) ETA2: But there *is* manga in Japan! Check the comments on the post I linked! (I think it's based on the anime, rather than the other way around.)

[identity profile] frostedelves.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow! Yum. That is one improbably hot whatever-he-is. I approve.

It's also neat to see that pattern-fill style somewhere else; I'd only ever seen it before in Gankutsuo, as two other folks have mentioned, and I thought it was unique to that. I can't remember if you've seen that, but if you haven't, you ought to. It's lovely based-on-Count-of-Monte-Cristo crack.

Something makes me think you have seen it and we've had this conversation already, and if so, my tired post-schoolquarter brain apologizes for the smashing redundancy. :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have not seen it, so if we had the conversation before, I don't remember it. XD

[identity profile] frostedelves.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly I was magically remembering this conversation, then, and have become unstuck in time!

If you can't find it, I could send it your way. I think you and Rachel would both enjoy it, from what I have noticed of your other tastes over time... and it's pretty, too. Lemme know. ;)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that could be ... nice. XD

[identity profile] madame-manga.livejournal.com 2007-11-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I can strongly recommend Gankutsuou -- the resident anime fiend watches most of his Netflix discs without my paying much attention to the TV, but I actually stayed in the room for most of that one. You could even turn the sound off and just groove on the colors -- it's like Dumas on LSD. :D

hehe, this anime is in progress for me. XD *just watched the umi bouzu arc last night*

Yay Mononoke! I really liked this show. I hated its genderstuff, but liked the show a lot in spite of that.

Medicine Sellers <3

[identity profile] urbi-et-orbi.livejournal.com 2007-11-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I love this series. I hope I can get my hands on a legit copy of ... anything! XD I wish Japan would come out with more anime like this.

wow, pretty. also, sakurai takahiro, whom i have great seiyuu-love for. must see. torrenting it down now while watching ayakashi on youtube.

ghods, i think i'll just go and buy it. the art is freaking awesome. i've seen gankutsuou, but this is technically better IMO.

you are such a fine pusher. :)
