Yup, I was thinking of Asprin's Omega Company, in part. But as you said, the squad/group full of nitwits and ne'er-do-wells that somehow keep getting out of scrapes is a standard trope. :D I ahvne't seen the idea played yet - there's bound to be games out there like that, but of the ones I've seen, people tend to want to be cooler characters.
