Thank Providence for pencil pieces - when you're making prints and your color ink cartridge just happens to run out of red (I have no earthly idea why it would do that), you can just switch to printing stuff originally drawn in pencil until another of the colors runs out, instead of changing the cartridge and wasting all that ink. (I've gotten about 20 prints so far without the red XD)

While I hesitate to suggest it, since they're expensive as hell generally, there are color printers with individual color cartridges. Usually CYMK setups.

That's a gorgeous L piece! :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I know. The money with which to buy one is not there, especially as long as this one is working. :)

Thank you!

Seriously? This is your larger format HP? And it still runs on a tricolor?

You know, I think I looked at that one last year when I was seeking a backup to the monster (http://pics.livejournal.com/pzb/pic/0000yddz/g6) when it died a week before Otakon, but was turned off but it not having individual cartridges (that, and it was about $400...which was a little more than I could afford to spend in that crunch...)

Then again, I could be totally smoking crack...which, at the moment...is totally possible *has still yet to actually start packing and we leave for Portland airport at 8 tomorrow morning...at least printing is done...*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, it's that one. It was an impulse purchase 2 years ago and has performed reasonably well, especially when I do things like the above as various colors run out. :D When it finally dies, I'll probably graduate to a tricolor, but I'll also see if I can get one that goes even larger, since the poster sizes fly off the table.

What type of printer do you use?

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I remember when you got it. And I remember it in the hotel room last year (and somehow managing to sleep through all of that....but I digress...)

Mine is an HP Designjet 130 (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06b/18972-18972-3328061-12600-3328079-352387-352389-352390.html?jumpid=oc_R1002_USENC-001_HP%20Designjet%20130%20Printer&lang=en&cc=us). It's a freaking ink sipper. 6 cartridges, which I replace roughly every 400 prints (and I'm meaning high quality on photo paper prints, but 8x10 and 12x16...it *can* do up to 24" wide, but I've not gotten paper large enough to feed through it before), with separate printheads that go about every three cartridge changes.

I've had a few minor issues with it (nevermind the carriage failure last year...at least it was still under warranty then and they came out to replace the carriage) but all in all, it's worked well for me. I ran off my last 10 prints last night, (my L (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/36606325/?qo=14&q=by%3Apzb&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps)) with two cartridges flashing at me as on their last leg, but I can probably still get another 50 prints out of those cartridges...

Cool. :) As I get more into this whole "art" thing, the toys get more and more expensive ... the scanner, the printer, the programs... it never ends!

Ah well, I can make the printer last a while longer yet, and with any luck (and a lot of Rachel's m4dz selling skillz), I'll sell most of the stuff, which will cover the scanner and part of Japan. XD

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
*is thoroughly jealous of your pretty new scanner*

Heh, we should been in good shape, spot-wise this year. And m4dz selling skillz are always a plus. XD But you know, if nothing else, you're selling a copy of each PBR and Spindrift (because I was a moron last year who didn't buy PBR in its first edition...but hey, you'll BOTH be there this year XD)

Awww, I like the L pic !!!

And that's a very pretty shade of red, so at least the cartridge exhausted itself for a good cause.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, thanks. XD

Yup, we'll be here and Rachel will be working her magic - AnimeFest is 1/3 the size of A-Kon, yet with her there last year, I sold about 85% of what I normally sell at A-Kon at AFest.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
XD The next cartridge is inexplicably printing a darker red. Still looks nice, bu the ink's slightly different. I don't know if it's because something else was also exhausted on the first one, or if it's due to being from two different manufacturers.

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, it's awesome when that happens. That's how Ohayocon was for me, (which was about a 2,000 attendee con) and I did more there than last year's AKon, though I attribute that having a sweet spot outside the dealer's hall exit. And, strangely enough, having no voice and using the card to communicate seemed to help.

An hour later, I realize stupid freaking LJ errored out on me....again....

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I've been putting off buying a new printer since mine died last year. I want a large scale one, but every time I price them, I realize that I could have the big dog's over at the local printing house do about five hundred sheets on their professional ones for the cost of the printer. OTOH, then I could do my pron in the comfort and security of mine own home. Decisions, decisions.

I wish I knew of a cheapie inkjet that would print cyan on B5 paper. Don't suppose you know of one?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope; the closest thing I know of (not that I've been looking lately) is mine, which is an HP 9650 that cost $400 two years ago.

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Dang. I found a review site that claims the HP deskjet f380 can do b4. I think this must be too good to be true, as that printer is like 80 bucks. I've emailed HP just in case, though, because if it is true, that'd be sweeeeeeeet.

Art is such an expensive hobby.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that'd be nice. :)

I know! Markers, agh! Scanner, agh! Printer, agh! There's something to be said for the long-ago days of #2 pencils and notebook paper...
