20 min, 3.5 mi. Slower today because it's late - I worked on a press kit for ConDFW with another con staffer, and then came home and shaped up a long DA forum reply into two columns for Tpop. (I swear, I've sent him one recently that he hasn't put up yet!) Anyway, I was sorely tempted to skip the biking, but I know myself - if I skip even a day, it's that much easier to just stop and That would be Bad.* So I gave myself permission to go slow and easy and stop after a while. Slayers is perfect exercise watcing, though: I get involved enough that the time flies by. Mind you, I'm mostly involved in laughing at how bad the animation is and at how big Rezo's hair gets with each episode, but anything that keeps me entertained.

And the geekery: 27 miles total, still on the rolling Road.




* Also why I'm posting here - if I fool myself into thinking that people are waiting for an update, I feel that much more obligated to keep doing it.

The only time previously I was able to do this was about a decade ago, when I was working at a small museum in South Dakota. I had a workout tape and did it every time I came home from work for a few weeks. I got to the point where I wanted to be active and do it after work. And then I got some horrible stomach thing that sidelined me for a solid week, because I couldn't move around without jolting my stomach unpleasantly, and got out of the habit. So I know that if I bull my way through two weeks or so, it becomes a habit, but I can't let up. :)

* And the secret to bulling through the first two weeks is to keep it easy on myself. I have a tendency to throw myself into exercise and overdo it, either making myself weak and shaky or hurting myself, and then I don't want to do it the next day. So I've been keeping it fairly easy on the bike, and not putting any tension on it. I'm not getting anywhere near the exercise that I can and that I feel like I ought, but if I end up associating pain and annoyance and loathing with the bike, I won't keep with it, so it's slow and easy for me right now. :)

Your efforts are inspiring me to pick up a cheap bike of my own when I'm back on the ground floor in a big bedroom with a widescreen computer and no intended social life. It seems like a great way to catch up on anime while forgetting that you're exercising, assuming you can hear the anime over the noise of the bike (but that is where having extremely noisy neighbours comes in handy for removing those pesky guilt inhibitions). It pre-empts the problem I end up having with workout videos of boredom and/or resenting the time it takes up. If I can just manage to connect anime with exercise, my world will be a better (well, sweatier at least) place! :D

This bike is quiet enough, despite the seat squeaking*, that I have to turn the volume up to hear it over the heater, instead of the bike. :)

I have so much on my plate to do that I tend to feel guilty for stopping and watching television, especially when it's something that I've already seen like Slayers, but the guilt vanishes if I'm on the bike, because I am combining activities. :D I also resent the time that working out takes up, but it doesn't seem to affect the bike. Probably since I'm watching anime. :)

* Not bad, but I probably need to either tighten the bolts on the seat or apply WD-40 to the bolts where they go through the holes in the frame.

I'm really measuring by minutes, but keeping track of the miles for the geeky walk-to-Rivendell thing, just to keep my interest going. :) I'm aiming for minimum 20 minutes a day, and for either the time to increase or the amount of tension I put on the bike to increase as I get slightly more in shape.

XD Thankyou! And if you haven't read it, I made a post yesterday about Sol Invictus and the difference in the bottle I had and the bottle I decanted from - the one I got before I decided to decant had a strong bitter neroli top note, which I don't like, and the one I decanted is much softer, which I like. So if you decide you want the bitter version, I'll be happy to swap out a decant from my bitter bottle for the softer one. :D If you want to keep the softer one, no biggie. :)

Which would be fine if I only cared about knowing just which words the characters are using in a given scene. :D I'm a pretty frequent rewinder with anime, I backtrack a lot to hear particularly good seiyuu moments or background music. Thank goodness for my cordless mouse!

While you mention it, I've been keeping an eye out for Slayers for a long time now, reason being that one of the characters is called Amelia, and when I was a child you couldn't even find pencils with my name on. Is it worth looking for more diligently now I'm a grown-up with a decent download speed? (I don't think Slayers has ever been televised in the UK.)

I've never even seen a container of WD-40, let alone applied it to anything. If I'd never watched Home Improvement, I would have thought you were making a Star Wars reference. Clearly I lose at basic DIY competence.

:D Yes, she's called Amelia/Ameria, depending on the romanization used. :) (Were the Amelia Bedelia kids' books not published in the UK? My cousin is named Amelia and Mom got her those when she was four or so.) It's worth looking for because it's at heart a parody of Dungeons and Dragons-type RPGs and the anime based on them, like Record of Lodoss Wars. And it somehow manages to rise above them, too, mostly due to the characters.

It's been out on VHS and DVD for so long, I'm not sure if it can be found online. Anyway, if you manage to find it, check the Wikipedia page to get the correct series names and the movie/OAV names. The series are better than the movies and OAVs.

OTOH, since you're in Japan, you might be able to find them in rental places (if you have a DVD player) or to find the original novels they're based on, although I don't know if they're in print or not.

WD-40 is a basic grease/oil/lubricant thing. :) Comes in a can with a long thin nozzle attachment that allows you to spray it into small, tight spaces that squeak annoyingly.
