BPAL Yule 2006 first impressions

My first impressions of the Yule 2006 scents, all just sniffed from the bottles.

Black Ice: Lovely, dangerous, slick, and bitterly cold: chilly white sleet-like notes with a hint of vetiver, a breath of smoky asphalt, and winter wind. -- Almost entirely vetiver.

The Darkling Thrush: The hope of springtime penetrating winter darkness. Snow, darkness, and icy air illuminated by the thrush’s song: warm amber, soft orris, and melancholy violet. -- I'm getting what I think is the orris and/or violet, with almost none of the amber.

Haloa: Wine grapes, myrrh, frankincense and olive leaf, and the warm scent of offertory cakes. -- A faintly wine-y cake.

Herr Drosselmeyer 2006: Magus, toymaker, and Godfather to Klara. An enigmatic man, seemingly somewhat sinister, but bearing a gentle air and a sincere love for children. This scent is dignified, refined, but dark, and hints towards esoteric mysteries and the secrets that tie mechanics to magick. Pipe smoke, sweet leather, woods and linen. -- Cherry pipe tobacco.

Jacob's Ladder 2006: The meeting of Heaven and Earth: golden amber, galbanum, benzoin, ambrette, rockrose, costus and tonka. -- Amber and something harsh - the benzoin?

Jolasveinar: Their scent is a mishmash of snow, dirt, Icelandic moss, marsh felwort, and the smushed petals of buttercups and moorland spotted orchids, with the barest hint of the scent of pilfered Christmas pastries. -- Definitely a mishmash, with a strong mentholatum-like scent coming out after a bit.

Knecht Ruprecht: The snow-covered foliage of the Black Forest and the fruit and woods of apple and almond trees. -- Evergreen scent, with a faint whiff of applewood underneath.

Krampus: Be good, or Krampus will toss you in a river! Sinister red musk, black leather, dusty rags, and wooden switches. -- The Lab's leather note triumphs over all.

Lick It Again: Every holiday season should be full of lewd suggestions and filthy double entendres, right? This is a new take on last year’s Lick It – a peppermint candy cane with an extra jolt of sugar. -- A sweet peppermint.

Midnight Mass 2006: This perfume is a traditional Roman Catholic sacramental incense, most often used during a Solemn Mass. Traditionally, five tears of this incense, each encased individually in wax that has been fashioned into the shape of a nail, are inserted into the paschal candle. This is, of course, represents the Five Wounds of Our Risen Savior. Symbolically, the burning of the incense signifies spiritual fervor, the fragrance itself inspires virtue, and the rising smoke carries our prayers to God. -- Soft incense - almost the church-y scent I'm looking for. Needs a bit more whiff of candles, though.

The Snow Maiden: Ylang ylang, osmanthus, spring berries, and daffodil cloaked in hoarfrost. -- Mostly that evergreen scent that the Lab uses for snow/frost and the like.

Snow-Flakes: The radiance and desolation of winter. -- The evergreen scent the Lab uses for snow, but deeper and lower, if that makes sense. I really don't like this one, and it's giving me a headache.

Sol Invictus: A radiant blend of solar oils: golden amber, saffron, heliotrope, hibiscus, citron, frangipani, frankincense, tangerine, mock orange, and orange blossom. -- Soft orange and amber.

Stardust 2006: This scent reflects the futurism, self-indulgence and excess of the Glitter 70’s: champagne, hyacinth, tuberose, ylang ylang and flashing white musk with jonquil, tobacco flower, white sandalwood and a pale poppy. -- A non-sharp soft floral, backed up with champagne.

The Winter of Our Discontent: Embrace your villainy: balsam, myrrh, mandarin orange, bitter clove, artemesia, rosewood, nutmeg, dark musk, smoke and cypress. -- I think I'm mostly getting the balsam from this, but I can't be sure.

Yule 2006: It is Yule, and the Holly King has slain the Oak: blood red holly berry, mistletoe, wild thyme, verbena, cinquefoil, hemp, winter rose, evergreen, frankincense, juniper, and myrrh. -- Lemon verbena, not sharp, but softly rounded. The Curse of Lemon Pledge is settling on this one.

Of them all, I think Sol Invictus may be my favorite. I like Stardut in the bottle, but not on me (I tested it :D). I really hate the note the Lab uses for snow/frost/whatnot, because it comes across as evergreen-to-mentholatum, depending on the blend, and not only am I allergic to many evergreen, I've enver liked the scent - it gives me a headache. I doubt I'll even try Snow-Flakes on myself, as it gives me a headache in the bottle. I think The Darkling Thrush may ahve too much violet for me, even though I love amber and orris, but I'll have to give it a longer try. Midnight Mass if fairly close to the scent I'm looking for in church-y type scents, only I want the smell of candles burning and the whiff of smoke as they're snuffed in it. I don't know if that's even possible in a perfume. :D I think I like this year's Jacob's Ladder better than last year's, but I'll have to give it a try on me. Haloa is interesting - it's got that baked-goods note the Lab uses that usually makes me sick to my stomach, but it doesn't seem to be doing it to me. I'm a bit nervous about trying it on me, however, after last year's Spooky contretemps. I like Herr Drosselmeyer a lot, but not to wear - itss almost pure pipe tobacco. I'd ahve to find a guy and put it on him for the proper experience. :D I'd also like to try The Winter of Our Discontent on a guy - it's interesting and so not girly in the bottle.

You mentioned in your earlier post that you still have imps available in these. When you are ready to sell them I am interested in the Herr Drosselmeyer 2006 one. I have a fondness for the smell of pipe tobacco... (childhood memories of my great-grandfather)

Please let me know!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
OK. :D

It's amusing the way that the reviews of last year's Herr Drosselmeyer mostly all say "You bottled my grandfather!" XD I don't have quite that emotional association since none of my male relatives smoked a pipe - I just associate it with walking through Post Oak Mall, by the tobacco and knife store, and smelling the tobacco. :)

Doesn't sound like a great update for you. I managed to talk myself out of ordering any, as I'm similar to you in that the snow/slush Lab note leaves me cold (no pun intended). Though to me it always smells, most weirdly, of pina colada, not evergreen.

(yes, I admit, I was just looking for an excuse to post so I can test out my snazzy new hat icon. I love this hat. *grin*)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most of them are not my thing. I did actually buy bottles of Darkling Thrush and Sol Invictus unsniffed, right when the update was posted, before I decided to do the decant circle. :D I'm going to give Jacob's Ladder a try on myself before the Yule scents come down, so I can decide whether or not to buy a bottle, and I'm going to have to decide if it's worth getting bottles of Herr Drosselmeyer and Winter of our Discontent for males of my acquaintance. :D

(It's a great hat!)

I'm glad I passed on Snow Maiden, which was the one that most tempted me (any mention of berries). But Sol Invictus sounds really tempting; I like citrus and amber.

The snow note turns to hot, prickly soap on me, but now that I have *finally* enabled Andy (he has a box for his perfumes and everything!), I got to smell it on someone it works well on, and it's really nice: sort of watery, sort of minty, sort of piney, but not really any of them.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm impressed. It's totally horrible on me and in my nose. XD Dark musk is pretty horrendous on me, too, but my friend [livejournal.com profile] bpggle reports that it turns to a nice gunpowder on him. I will have to drive to San Antonio to smell him at some point, just to see.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it a lot - on me it gets soft and subtle. It's not sparkling, which would take lemon, I think, and then it'd fall to the Curse of Lemon Pledge, but it's a nice sunshiney scent.

I just put a drop of Jacob's Ladder on my wrist - oooh, nice. The harshness goes away. If it doesn't come back, I may ahve to grab a bottle of this.

[identity profile] helen-keeble.livejournal.com 2007-01-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What cannot be seen in this icon is the fact that the somewhat worried expression on my face is due to me pondering how best to stop Shub-Niggurath from overrunning Arkham Graveyard with countless Cultists, and whether it would be better to go to the Asylum or the Science Building in search of A Clue.

In this sort of predicament, a bitchin' hat is a great comfort.

(we were playing the boardgame Arkham Horror, which I heartily recommend to all Mythos fans. Oh, and it will relieve you all to know that Shub-Niggurath was indeed prevented from taking over the world, thanks to the sacrifice of one brave investigator - who gunned down mi-go, cultists, and witches with cool insouciance... only to go down to a truly unfortunate random encounter: "I went to talk to a man on a street corner. He ate me." Great game.)

... and, damnit, forgot to use the right userpic. Behold once more the hat!

Is Black Ice a good vetiver? I like vetiver quite a lot. And The Darkling Thrush sounds interesting, I've been on a quest for a good melancholy violet that is easier to come by than Après l'Ondée (the quintessential melancholy violet IMNSHO, with a lot of anise to boot).

I love the orange/amber combo on other people, but my skin seems to delight in turnong orange notes into flaming plastic. Drat.

[identity profile] blissfish.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, gunpowder. Yum.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to say about Black Ice because I seriously dislike vetiver. :D I can't smell much of anything else but vetiver, though. The reviews on the BPAL forum are saying it's a cold vetiver, rather than a warm one. (http://www.bpal.org/index.php?showtopic=27892&hl=Black+Ice)

I've got a bottle of Darkling Thrush bought unsniffed when the Yule update went live - I can decant some for you, if you want. The Yule update's going down on January 30 or 31, but there's plenty of people swapping and selling on LJ and eBay and the BPAl forums. Plus, I'm not sure I really like the scent, either the orris is coming out too strong or the violet is taking over on me, and the amber hides, so I may decide to offload the bottle.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
* I just checked teh Darkling Thrush reviews (http://www.bpal.org/index.php?showtopic=27900), and I know what I'm getting - it's the Lab's winter/snow/ice blend, popping out strongly (and even stronger as I wear it). I'm not keeping this.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I whish I got gunpowder. I get Dead! Rotting! Skunk! and it clings to my skin through all sorts of detergents and chemicals for 18 hours. I wish there were scents I *liked* that had that staying power.

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
some of these seem nice!

[identity profile] badnoodles.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that I have an indifferent sense of smell - BPAL would be too much of an attraction.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
There's probably BPAL that would even get to you. :)

[identity profile] blissfish.livejournal.com 2007-01-21 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Let me know if you decide to sell the bottle/decants. I'm interested in giving it a try.

Oh hey! Lemon Pledge actually works on me! If you don't want it, I'd be willing to buy Yule 2006...
