Heh. It was spawned by someone wanking on about how English was a pointless major for [insert various ill-thought-out, badly-spelled reasons here]. "English is a silly major" appears to be the catchphrase of the day over at fandom_wank now, and I couldn't help but hear it in the tones of Graham Chapman.
I read part of the wank off a link from metaquotes, and-- Ugh. Not too happy about that one. I mean, we've all gotta do useful things, yanno? Certainly not English. >:(
Ah. And those reasons were along the lines of "We don't need a technical writer, because I'm a published writer as well as programmer...and I've received awards for my Wesley/Worf slashfic!", I take it? I know the type all too well.
Oh yes. And things like "It's not a HIGH PAYING JOB and therefore is worthless" and "It doesn't contribute anything useful to society, like architecture".
Considering the shithead I used to work for who honestly threw a fit because he wasn't getting a junket tour for his Perl programming book, I'm not surprised in the slightest. Why is it that the ones who disparage the ability to write the most are the ones who secretly want to become writers "so I won't have to work again"?
