Book within a book...

(This will be posted to [livejournal.com profile] whatwasthatbook eventually, but the moderation queue is full since the community was featured on the LJ front page recently. I figured I'd post it here on the off chance it strikes a bell with any of you.)

I read this book during the fall of 1991, from the public library in the Welsh city where I was spending a semester abroad for college. I have no idea when it was published, although I want to say significantly earlier than 1991, or if it was published outside the UK. I associate pink with the cover, but I could be seriously wrong about that.

It was set in a small village in the English countryside, with no specific time period other than mid-20th-century that I can recall. In it, a woman living in the village wrote a book about a similar small village, with characters based on people in her village. In the book-within-the-book, a faun- or satyr-type creature playing panpipes came out of the woods and went through the village, sparking changes in the characters and their relationships. The book this was published in ended up acting in the same way on the people of the village as they learned about it, read it, and speculated who the author was (she'd used a pseudonym, I seem to remember).
